I like reading the expression of foundation issues by the people who were among he first to assess the issues. Even though they can appear dated at times, core concepts are often explained fully as the author often does not assume as much familiarity as a modern assessment does. It also becomes the foundation of artifacts that do not fully identify their origins. With that introductions, I am posting a link to “Smashing the Stack for Fun and Profit.” by Elias Levy, identified in the paper as Aleph One. It is a first thorough explanation of the buffer overflow, and I think that it serves functionally (understanding the processes identified and explained) and culturally as a common frame of reference in the Hacker Community. For purposes of this group, your Penetration Testing will improve if you understand and utilize concepts identified in this paper particularly as it related to stack processes and memory management. “Smashing the Stack for Fun and Profit.”
