GIAC Certifications

What's everyones take on these? They seem to be pretty decent.

I keep re-reading their site as it seems confusing, maybe someone here can help me out. You can take the tests online, anytime, from any computer then pass and get a certificate. But if you take a SANS course and pass then you receive a 'gold' certificate? Is that the idea?

Re: GIAC Certifications

No to the get the gold you first have to pass the test. Then you have to pay extra and submit a practical, which is just a technical paper on a topic related to the certification you are testing for.

Also, you don't have to go to conference, they have Sans @home and a few other options to avoid travel expenses. If you have the money though, the conferences are fun to go to and you get to meet alot of different people and attend the presentations at night.

Re: GIAC Certifications

To obtain your GIAC Certification, you need to pass their exam.  This will give you the "Siilver" certification.  If you're up for writing a practical, and it's accepted, that will earn you a "Gold" certification.

You can see if there's a "mentor-led" training class in your area.  This can be a lot cheaper then an actual conference & you still have the hands-on labs there.  Or you can do the SANS@Home, OnDemand or even challange the cert for a few hundred $$$.

Re: GIAC Certifications

Alright, and to take and pass the exam, it's nothing more than registering on their website right? You don't go to a testing center? That just amazes me that these would be such respected certifications if they give you the ability to sit there with a book and look up the answers while taking the test.

I think it'd be beneficial to writing the paper to receive the Gold certification.

I'll have to look into the 'mentor-led' training you're talking about. I was looking for the online/OnDemand option as that'd work out best... I noticed it was the same price as the Sans@Home course though. I saw 'challenge the cert' but I thought that meant take the test.. is it something different?

Re: GIAC Certifications

Yeah, to challange the cert is to self-study with your own study materials and then pay a few hundred to write the certification exam itself.  And yes, you write it in the comfort of your own home.  I think they mainly want to know if you know how to find the answers in the quickest amount of time possible from any source.  You don't have long on each question.  They give you 2hrs and there's about 80 questions.  I've just finished my first exam for the GCIH and taking the 2nd exam tomorrow.  It's a good challange anyway.  ;)

Re: GIAC Certifications

I think I got it. Just to make sure, let me go over it one last time...

So I can sign-up for a ~ $2,000-$2,500 self-study course with certification attempt and study on my own. Then pass the first exam, and the second exam (both of which are open book/notes according to the GIAC site). If I pass both with a 70% avg, I receive a silver certification. Then if I want to receive a gold certification I can fill out an application and send it in, then pay a $300 fee, and then write up a technical paper.

Haha, do I have it  ???

How to post cert initials?

Wasn't sure where to put this, so it's going in the same thread.

Any suggestions on how to present my new SANS cert beside my name?  Should it be "GCIH", "GIAC GCIH", "SANS GCIH" or "SANS GIAC GCIH"?  :-\  haha

Thanks.
