How to learn PERL!

Can anyone recommended a good book or online video contents on learning PERL?

Like idiots guide as I have not done much programming but want to get good at it.

Thanks

Re: How to learn PERL!

I've always liked Learning Perl. The latest edition just came out. I usually get started and then have to give up to go do other things and forget enough by the time I get back to it.

+1 for Learning Perl, 5th Edition, a nice book to get started.

I didn't check for Perl but there might be some good videos here - http://showmedo.com/

if you are starting to learn some new programming language why don't you consider Python?? (Perl is a nice language but I am a little bit biased towards Python)

I did use the Learning Perl book too which I thought was pretty good.  I think it some errors in it and I had to find the errata on the site a lot.  I usually ended up doing a lot of regular expression scripts tho.

Re: How to learn PERL!

There's a good book on coding for penetration tester that was released last week. Among other scripting languages that the book talks about, Perl is included. This is a must read and I'm definitely going to get my hands on it.

Re: How to learn PERL!

That's the 2nd time today I heard about that "Coding for Penetration Tester" book.  Is it good for an absolute programming beginner?  I keep debating whether or not to learn Python as my first language or Perl.  I heard Python is much more popular/beneficial in the hacking world (more tools/exploits written in it) but at work, we only use Perl and SQL for programming languages.

p0et,

I say learn the language that you use at work, you'll pick it up fast (since you will definitely use it everyday) and then you'll be able to pick up python faster if you ever decide to learn that one as well.

Have you thought about Ruby?

I am from a vbscript & perl background, then evolved into powershell & perl. I work mainly in Ruby know, it's pretty easy & powerful, and is generally agnostic about OS.

Re: How to learn PERL!

I think there is a "Learn Perl the hard way" book.  I am currently using the free Python one to learn that and it gets decent reviews.  I mostly use Powershell though in my day-to-day activities.  Import-CSV = awesome! :D

Re: How to learn PERL!

PowerShell is pretty sweet, the Stop-Process cmdlet is the first thing I've seen from MSFT that actually operates the way kill would in *nix.

I guess I'd suggest just focusing on a few items that need to be scripted, plotting out the logic, then writing them in a different language until you find one you really feel comes naturally to you. Taking that first step into programming/scripting is scary if from a non-dev background but after a few months of doing it you'll look back and be like wtf took me so long  :P
