IT Security experts in short supply

http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2010/07/19/242006/Skills-shortage-leaves-critical-US-military-systems-at.htm

Estimates put the number of sufficiently skilled cyber security experts in the US at around 1,000. That is far below the 20,000 to 30,000 the country needs.

Good for those that have the skills, but bad for the country.  Hmm...

I wonder what they consider significantly skilled.

Agreed... 1000 seems a bit low, unless someone's standards are VERY high.  Might not be a LOT higher, dependent upon their definition of significant skills, but definitely seems low...

While China doesn't officially support hacking, they do little to discourage it.  There are all kinds of rumors about government funded hacker groups circling around.  Hackers are equivalent to rock stars there, from what I understand.  It's certainly different from how hacking is perceived in the US.

Still, 1,000 is an extremely low number.

This is true, I went to a job interview one year ago and when they ask me about my goals and I said penetration testing and mention Ethical hacker I felt that lost any possibility, they saw me like if I was planning to do a phelony.

Re: IT Security experts in short supply

I thought the numbers were pretty low too, but I figured it was related to the DoD certifications, those who have many or all of them.  For those kind of positions there may be very few.  In government, it is definitely quantity over quality.
