18 Days of Reckless Computing

is a diary of someone who started out with a brand new computer and deliberately clicked on every attachment that was spammed his way. It makes for some amusing reading.

;D :D ;D :D ;D :D

Check it out here.

Re: 18 Days of Reckless Computing

I often wondered what would happen if I did that.  It is like the documentary "Super Size Me", but for computers.  LOL!  ;D

Re: 18 Days of Reckless Computing

They taught me in CEH class that if you buy a brand new computer boom out of the box, plug it in, and connect to the Internet, in 20 minutes, it can be infected by viruses and malware, spyware, etc. 20 minutes!

Just goes to show, the safest computer in the world is one that is unplugged, packed in it's box, and buried six feet underground. Editorial note:the headstone could very easily read "Co***q Pr***ario"

That is correct! Go to the SANS Internet Storm Center and look at the bottom right hand side. You'll see a heading labled "Survival Time" (at the time of writing these lines the time is 22 minutes).

The main problem here is that after installing a new OS, the survival time may be shorter than the time it takes to download and install critical patches.

Re: 18 Days of Reckless Computing

I can also comfirm that from personal experience while working in a university environment. Under 30 minutes is the norm, not only because of the speed and openness of the network but also because of the wide-spread use of public IP addresses for all computers.

So are you saying that a lab at this university was NOT using private IP addressing on their internal network? Isn't there something wrong with that? Who set up that network? You set them straight and corrected that, I hope, right?
