ParticipantThanks, I guess, but on any machines I have, which have the necessary resources, Windows 7 is snappy, for me, at least more so than Vista. It’s definitely NOT as quick as XP (agreed there,) and I wouldn’t use it as my primary machine, anyway. I really, at least for now, only use it as a target on my test network. I prefer to do day to day on Ubuntu or openSuSE, anyway… 😉 (Then I fall back to XP to help thw wife and kids with their MS Office schoolwork…)

ParticipantWindows XP is far from better, especially since it is being EOLed. Windows Vista and 7 are good pieces of software (I’ve never had a problem with Vista, honestly), but for older hardware they need to be tweaked. There are a lot of graphic/CPU intensive processes/overhead. You can disable most (http://www.computingunleashed.com/2009/06/speed-up-windows-7-ultimate-guide-to.html), if not all, of those options. You can disable Aero Glass, disable search indexing, disable other visual effects, disable unnecessary services, and much more (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=performance+tweaks+windows+7).

ParticipantWell I think it’s pretty good. I’ve been using win xp for ages and didn’t really want to upgrade at first. Windows 7 is probably a bit slower, but I like all the features it offers and of course it’s more visually appealing 😛 It still seems to be faster than Vista at least. My hardware is pretty good so I didn’t really notice a difference in performance. Thought Windows 7 booted a bit slower, but most of my applications seem to load faster.
Also Windows 7 automatically found all my drivers and gives me the updates for them. Every time I install XP for someone I have to search the internet for the right drivers, because the person lost all his CD’s and backups.
I think this really depends on what you expect from the OS and what your needs are. I use my system for everything, from development to gaming and I’ve never had a problem with Windows 7.

In FULL agreement, unsupported. I agreed XP was faster, not better, and even then, clarified on hardware with resources available. I’d heard that disabling the Aero Glass helped a lot, but haven’t tried it. Just like any GUI OS, the more you can (or are willing to) disable, the better performance will be, if for NO other reason than the freeing up of memory and resources.
Thanks for the links… If I ever decide to use Windows 7 more ‘full-time,’ I’ll look them over, myself. Until then, I’ll happily continue to use my XP boxes for required tools, and my Linux boxes for the rest!

ParticipantThere are a lot of good sites that guide you on tweeking 7 for speed and I have had some good results following their suggestions. I actually found it very fast and much improved. Its a good OS for general home entertainment use.

ParticipantWindows 7 is currently the best thing (while XP is the next best) for your average user. Win7 is a big leap forwards compared to Vista and giving the fact it performs very well on “older” machines it outruns Vista on every aspect (making Vista 100% obsolete).
If your computer does not run Win7 smoothly there are 2 options: either replace the hardware, or keep running the current software. Giving the fact that windows xp is pretty old for software standards (10 years and counting! so its damn time they EOLed it) i’d say its time to upgrade your computer. unfortunately computers dont last forever and even if their technology outstands their functionality it should be replaced a lot sooner then you might want.

ParticipantXp works best for me, but that may be the case just because of my system, I’ll admit to a certain level of sentimental attachment to it:)

ParticipantI am an enormous fan of Windows 7, try installing it on a 72000 rpm drive, or maybe a SSD, and youll see performance increases. It is defiantly is a massive improvement over vista, Ive seen great machines that run horrible with vista, Ive also seen horrible machines that run Windows 7 pretty well.
my biggest complaint with was trying to play some older games that just wouldnt work right, even in compatibility mode.

ParticipantI think Win7 is great (especially for the end user). In my opinion, it does seem to use quite a bit of RAM in comparison to Linux alternatives (and my preference). But I still like Win7 for the occasional game or Windows tool. However, I understand that memory management is a totally different animal in Win7.
Also, WinXP came out at the end of 2001. That is ancient in terms of computers/operating systems. -

ParticipantIt seems to be explorer itself that takes up so much ram. But I would say it doesnt take up nearly as much ram or proc useage as vista. In addition, ie resource consumption is improved greatly.

Participantnot that bad actually. I worry more about the laptop’s processor than the hdd. I upgraded it to a Athlon 3500+ it runs hot but fine, i did however have this drive, not the 72k overheat on me the other day. weird, i know.

ParticipantSorry, I was poking fun. I think you meant 7200 RPM, not 72000. 😉
