      DEF CON 19
      August 4 – 7, 2011
      Las Vegas, NV

      What is DEF CON?

It has become a cultural event all hackers must attend at least once in their lives. This, combined with Black Hat and now BSidesLV, is now the one event each year I don’t miss. See below for more descriptions from their FAQs:

      Official DEF CON FAQ v0.95
      Unofficial Defcon FAQ v3.0

      Venue (New Location Alert!)

Rio Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
      3700 West Flamingo Road

They were at the Rio before?

I have been twice to the Riviera (Defcon 17 and 18) but never to the Rio. When were they there? Is it bigger than the Riviera?

Hah!  That’s where I was thinking… friggin Riviera.  Ok… the Rio, yeah that’s new to me.  I am just tired of the Riviera.  Rio.. yeah, I think I went there for brunch once.  Sorry!  Heh.

      No problems g00d_4sh!

I agree with you the Riviera is somehow below average. And the food is really crapy around this casino…

Let’s hope the Rio is better!

Amen.  I didn’t stay at the Riv though, my worst stay in Vegas was the NOT-SO Imperial Palace… that wont’ happen again.  Paris last year wasn’t bad, but I’m hoping to snag gov rate at the Bell this year.

I’ll be in Vegas all week doing as much as I can. You’re more likely to find me at one of the parties.  😮

I was unexpectedly able to make an “emergency” change in my schedule and book a trip. I’d love to meet any other EHer’s who are able to make it out. I had to miss out the last couple of years because of various circumstances, so I was truly glad that “the third time is a charm” held true.

(I will be with DC225 – check out the presentation on Friday night)

Nothing official this year. Raphael Mudge and I will be at Galleria Bar @ Caesars in about 10 minutes. How’s that?

Tomorrow (Wed) should be at BH lunch if anyone wants to meet. I’ll be hopping between parties Wed night including The Crystal Ball, FishNet and Rapid7.

How’s that for a start? You can always tweet me as well.

Now all you social engineers can track me!!

I only arrive late Wednesday night, so no party for me tonight…

I will meet dynamik for sure and we will try to find Don somewhere. It will be fun to finally put a face on a name!!

Same here. I’ll probably arrive anywhere from 8-10pm tonight.

I just received a free upgrade from IAH to LAS, and I think a game of, “How much free booze can I drink in 2h15m?” is a foreboding way to start off the weekend…  😮

I ended up meeting dynamik, pseudo and Don from EH.net. It was nice to put a face on a name. Had good chats with them!!

And rance, I spent quite some time in the lock picking village. So we probably cross there… Oh well, next time I guess!

Who’s all going to Def Con 20?  I really want to attend a conference next year and it seems DEF CON is the one to go to.  How did you guys like DEF CON this year?

DefCon 19 was my first, and it was AWESOME!  I’ll be at 20, and every one after that.  ;D

More talks than you can shake a stack trace at, and contests for whatever part of security you’re interested in.  The downfall?  Too much to do.  I went to a LOT of talks this year.  While the majority of the talks were spectacular, they’ll show up online eventually, or make their way to a different con (i plan to start attending more of these things, starting with Shmoo).  Next year I plan to only attend a few talks, and really get more involved with the contests and challenges.  It’s much more social than sitting in talks, and it gives you a chance to flex your 1337 sk1llz in an unknown environment. 🙂

No matter what aspect of security you’re in, there should be something for you: The DC19 contest/events list: https://forum.defcon.org/forumdisplay.php?f=573

I need to put together a few teams for next year.  On my onw, I’ll be doing Gringo Warrior and the beard competition, but need a team for oCTF, and Hacker Jeopardy.  The SE-CTF would be fun too, going to have to see how time pans out.

      Anyway, see you at XX!

Derbycon is better than DefCon in my opinion 😉

I’m curious what everyone thinks about the different conferences. I’m planning on attending Black Hat USA 2012, but I haven’t really compared the different conferences. I just need to get into one, and make my own observations.

I have not been to either.  Why do you think Derbycon is better?  I am definitely going to the next one (#2) next year.  I was just curious as to what made it better??

DerbyCon had all the good talks, smaller conference with a real family vibe. DefCon tends to have some issues with elitism here and there and it’s too large for me. Sure there’s tons of cool stuff to do but I’ve always been more partial to the B-sides style events. Pretty much every speaker at DerbyCon was approachable and it was a real treat to hang out with folks I consider to be top tier talent in the industry over a beer and not feel like I was out of place. These folks are WAY smarter than I am but they never talked down to me, and if they had anything negative to say (about me) it happened after I left. Just a really awesome event. Lots of stuff to do, amazing talks, extremely well organized and really fun time. I’m not into nerdcore but if you are, Dual Core put on a great show too which is a bonus.

Let me put it this way, DerbyCon had roughly 10% of the attendees that DefCon had yet raised more money for HFC. It’s all about Quality over Quantity and it shows. There is no better hacker con that I know of, but some I spoke with felt ShmooCon was a close 2nd to DerbyCon. I’ll be going to Shmoo for the first time this next year (I’m hoping, submitted a talk so we shall see) so I’ll reserve my judgement there until I experience it firsthand.

Thanks for the little review of derbycon. Just like yourself I prefer a smaller crowd, so I’ll definitely look into Derbycon. I think for my first conference I’ll go to Defcon then start going to the smaller/ unique conferences.
