    Hey All,

Just wanted to throw a quick note out there updating you on what we’ve been thinking behind-the-scenes and what’s coming.

In a nutshell, we have some needs, desires, deadlines on support and service, and much more on our plate. All of this and more is prompting us to look at migrating EH-Net from it’s current platform to something new. We’re hot on keeping this community based on LAMP, but other than that, anything goes! We’ve been pretty much open to any platform, open source, free or commercial, that best fits our needs. Unfortunately, I’m not finding a single solution for everything, but I’m doing my best.

As you know, we currently run Joomla CMS and Simple Machines Forum (SMF) and connect them with a bridge. This allows us to have single-sign on (SSO), integrated discussions for our articles, calendar, private messaging… all within a single look and feel. I’m doing everything I can to keep it that way. It’s proving harder than you would think. Argh!!

This is a short list of the larger items we’d like to tackle:

    1. Move to a faster dedicated server.
    2. Implement our recently purchased SSL certificate
    3. Create a better backend for our advertisers
    4. In addition to our Columns and Articles, setup Blogs (less formal publications with no editing process) for interested EH-Netters (PM me if you’d like to be considered)
    5. Better SPAM prevention
    6. Upgrade everything!!

We have a number of small items as well, but those can always be done later and/or added as we move along. The big things need to be baked in from the get-go.

With that in mind, I also want everyone to know that no project of this magnitude goes off without a hitch. There will be sacrifices on my end and yours. In the end it should set us up for big, long-term growth. Here’s what I may have to sacrifice:

    1. Changing the look and feel of EH-Net.
    2. Taking an initial hit in the search engines as we transition to new, friendlier URLs
    3. We may lose some members as they may not like new stuff. 3h!t happens.

    What might happen to you:

    1. Might lose functionality or have to adjust to the way old things are accomplished in the new system
    2. Might lose password and have to reset it (not always a bad thing)

In the end, this process has really helped the creative juices start to flow. It slows things down on outward appearances, but it’s been a lot of work that no-one sees. All in all, I’m happy and excited for the future of EH-Net.

So I have a few questions for you:

    1. Are you on-board with what we may have to do?
    2. How extensively do you use PMs through our forums?
    3. who’s interested in Blogging for EH-Net?
    4. Who’s willing to help test?
    5. Who’s willing to possibily help moderate the forums?
    6. Anyone willing to lend a hand who has expertise in PHP, MySQL, design?
    7. Should we implement OpenID, login with Twitter?

This should be plenty to get the conversation rolling.

Thanks in advance for always being there,
    Don

PS- Please keep in mind, that I have already been at this a while and have narrowed down some decisions. Things will hopefully move very quickly.

Personally, I’m excited to see the new EH-Net!

    To answer your specific questions:

    1) Absolutely. A few growing pains that I may or may not feel are not going to drive me away from such a helpful community! Its worth the pain for me to stick around.
    2) I like having the PM available, but I really don’t use PM’s that often.
    3) Depending on the time commitment (I have 3 kids under the age of 6 and travel about 25%), I would be interested in blogging for EH-Net from time to time.
    4) *raises his hand*
    5) *twiddles his thumbs*
    6) I’m sure someone has useful expertise on PHP, MySQL, and design, but it ain’t me!
    7) I don’t have a strong feeling toward OpenID one way or another, but I will tell you that I typically do not link my GMail credentials (I don’t use Twitter or Facebook) to very many other sites through OpenID.

Thanks for all the hard work you put into this site, Don! I’m always willing to give back where I can and am looking forward to all the changes you have in store!

    1. Are you on-board with what we may have to do?

I trust you to make whatever changes are necessary.  It’s not like other sites don’t change.

    2. How extensively do you use PMs through our forums?

Not very.  I probably haven’t sent a PM in six months.

    3. who’s interested in Blogging for EH-Net?

Maybe.  I’ve been blogging on my own site for a while.  I just can’t say if I’d want to move things over or not.

    4. Who’s willing to help test?

I’d be happy to provide feedback, but I work full-time and am in school so I couldn’t devote any serious time to testing.

    5. Who’s willing to possibily help moderate the forums?

I’d be really happy if I could just delete spam when I see it.

    6. Anyone willing to lend a hand who has expertise in PHP, MySQL, design?

    Not my area 🙁

    7. Shold we implement OpenID, login with Twitter?

I’d be willing to log in with Twitter.  Would there be any way to associate with our current usernames or would we lose those?

  • #52553

    1. Definitely.
    2. I send a PM maybe once or twice a month?
    3. I would be interested. I know you have a lot of experience security professionals writing for you but what if you took another approach…a newbie in security, working his way up the ranks professionally and academically (certs/security related schooling). I think having a “green” security professional blogger will help a lot of the new-comers relate.
    4. I would be willing to help test in any way I can.
    5. I would be happy to help moderate as well.
    6. I don’t think I can help in this department.
    7. I do not use Twitter, so I have no opinion.

    1. 100%.

    2. Infrequently.

    3. In the future, but not for now.

    4. I am.

    5. Possibly, you know I don’t like SPAM, although hopefully this won’t be so much of a problem in the future.

    6. Not my area either.

    7. Personally I wouldn’t use it, but that’s no reason not to offer it to others.

EH-Net has helped me alot, so I would be more than happy to help where I can.

Willing to help any way I can, don.

I might use PM on here, more than many, but it’s nothing crucial.

Happy to help moderate.  I know I’m generally in, looking at posts, more than ‘most’, due to my availability, so happy to help where I can, there.

Would consider blogging, as well, although I’ve never been one to keep the world up on my day-to-day thoughts / activities, and as security / penesting are only my side / part-time gig (always willing to change THAT), I might not have as much to share, in a blog.

I’m not much for writing website code (unless I’m looking to break it, it’s been yeas since I developed websites / pages), so my skills won’t be much help, there.

Testing, sure. Glad to help.  OpenID / Twitter logins, again, sure, although I generally don’t use that feature.

Let me know if I can assist.

First of all, I am 100% behind the proposed changes Don. So go for it!

    My answers:
    1) 100%
    2) About once a month. I don’t see this to be a critical thing to keep. Sometime useful, but nothing more than this…
    3) I don’t have much time these days, but I can definitively see myself blogging in the future.
    4) I will be happy to help you test Don
    5) Like Hayabusa, I am on the forum very often. I wouldn’t mind at all being a moderator
    6) I know MySQL very well, so I can help on this side. I don’t know PHP much, but I know a very good designer who is also an ethical hacker. Let me talk to him… 😉
    7) I don’t care about OpenID or login with Twitter. Whatever you want to do!

    Also:
    – SSL is a great idea !!
    – I would be very happy with a faster server, I have noticed some important delays in the past year or so
    – A new design wouldn’t hurt, so feel free to change it!  😉
    – Don’t worry about us losing some functionalities. We spend 99% of our time on the forum anyways!

So that’s good news Don! I can’t wait to see the new site! 🙂

    1. With EH-NET all the way!
    2. Not too extensively. Less than a handful of times a year am I messaging users.
    3. Possible
    4. I could also help you test.
    5. Like a couple of the other members, I’ve been a consistent long-term member. I would love a moderator opportunity as long as we do not discount moderators winning the fabulous prizes.
    6. Not my expertise but I’ve taken a couple PHP and Web Dev Classes in College. Could be a possibility of me helping.
    7. Open to the idea of implementing these. I do not use them personally.

Excited about the new changes. The new spam measures will prove effective. We get bots signing up here occasionally. Looking forward to it.

    1. Absolutely
    2. A decent amount to ask questions
    3. I couldn’t offer much except for reviews of the courses I take but I would absolutely do that.
    4. I’m game
    5. A report as spam button would be awesome
    6. Not much help here
    7. No opinion

This is exciting news. To answer your questions:

    1. Definitely. Looking forward to it.

    2. Not very much at all.

    3. Unsure.

    4. I’d be willing to help test.

    5. If it means less spam, then yes, I’d be willing to help moderate. I work full time but I’m on EH pretty much everyday, so sure.

    6. Not me forte.

    7. Doesn’t matter to me.

    1) Onboard with changes? Certainly
    2) Use of PMs? Every now and then
    3) Blogging? It’s a good idea, will help expand content
    4) Test? Sure
    5) Moderate? Sure
    6) Develop? Well since there weren’t many other replies for this one guess I’ll raise my hand. It’s been a while since I messed with Joomla but if you need some custom modules built or modifications made to underlying code I’m sure I can help
    7) OpenID? Impartial but I think it could be useful

Oh and, of course, we all appreciate your work and efforts in building this community, Don. Great job over the years! Glad to be here and happy to help out where possible.

    5. Can’t at the moment due to time constraints but would definitely look into it in the future if offered.

    Nice!

    @don wrote:

    2. Taking an initial hit in the search engines as we transition to new, friendlier URLs

Depending on how things change, it may be possible to script 302 redirects for the existing content. I’ve done this before. Then you’re not having people lose bookmarks, etc. as well. Your rankings will probably skyrocket with the descriptive URLs, so it will certainly be worth whatever the initial hit is.

    @don wrote:

    3. We may lose some members as they may not like new stuff. 3h!t happens.

Then they were not worthy in the first place. Deal with it.

    @don wrote:

    1. Might lose functionality or have to adjust to the way old things are accomplished in the new system

I’m curious what functionality may be lost. This version of SMF seems rudimentary compared to other current platforms. Any changes should be fairly intuitive to this crowd.

    @don wrote:

    1. Are you on-board with what we may have to do?

    Yes.

    @don wrote:

    2. How extensively do you use PMs through our forums?

I guess I’m in the minority as I use them fairly often. Granted, I usually switch to some form of IM once I build up a rapport with someone and start exchanging messages frequently. I’d be most concerned about losing the PMs I have stored (17 pages). I could script a download of those easily enough, but less active members may miss notice that they’ll be disappearing if it’s not possible to carry them over. Maybe you could keep a legacy read-only copy of the current forums available if nothing else.

    @don wrote:

    3. who’s interested in Blogging for EH-Net?

I’m going to sound like a snob, but if I’m putting something custom together for EH, I’d rather have that go as one of the featured pieces, such as the reviews I’ve done, as opposed to a blog article. I’d typically post something less formal on my own blog.

    @don wrote:

    4. Who’s willing to help test?

    Sure.

    @don wrote:

    5. Who’s willing to possibily help moderate the forums?

Probably nothing extensive due to time constraints, but I could remove any spam that makes it through the filter, as I come across it.

    @don wrote:

    6. Anyone willing to lend a hand who has expertise in PHP, MySQL, design?

Again, depends on how much time would be required. I could help out with bits and pieces.

    @don wrote:

    7. Should we implement OpenID, login with Twitter?

I’m personally not big on using social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to authenticate to other sites, but it might be beneficial to provide them as optional authentication methods for those that want them. I don’t use OpenID either, but again, it might be a nice compliment to the built-in authentication mechanism for those that want it.

I use this site alot in the past few months I have not been about as been buying house and getting married and all the other wonderful things about life. However here is what I think..

    1. Are you on-board with what we may have to do?
Yes as in the long run it will benefit the end user.

    2. How extensively do you use PMs through our forums?
I hardly ever use PM’s I think they are more used by people spamming me.

    3. who’s interested in Blogging for EH-Net?
I could maybe do some stuff depending on topics so on.

    4. Who’s willing to help test?
I am more than happy to test/break the new site.

    5. Who’s willing to possibily help moderate the forums?
This would depend on how it was done and if there were certain times but again I could possible help.

    6. Anyone willing to lend a hand who has expertise in PHP, MySQL, design?
My PHP, MYSQL are a little rusty but I dont mind getting involved and helping in anyway I can.

    7. Should we implement OpenID, login with Twitter?
I am not too sure on this I mean it would make it easy to log on but I like to have different username and password and just reset them when I get them rather than using same one.

    Yep!

    2. How extensively do you use PMs through our forums?

Not very often. Maybe once every few months and it’s usually other people initiating the conversation.

    3. Who’s interested in Blogging for EH-Net?

I’d be interested in having the capability, but I honestly wouldn’t be blogging all that much.

    4. Who’s willing to help test?

If there’s a task list to knock out that I could load up when possible during working hours or late at night, sure! I can’t commit to anything scheduled though, work’s pretty hectic.

    5. Who’s willing to possibily help moderate the forums?

While I would love the opportunity to just delete spam threads as I see them, I don’t know much time I’d be able to commit to other moderator duties (see above).

    6. Anyone willing to lend a hand who has expertise in PHP, MySQL, design?

    If I knew PHP/MySQL, definitely…but I don’t 🙁

    7. Should we implement OpenID, login with Twitter?

    I’d support this.

2: PM has it’s moments. There have been several members that I have conversed that way with. It’s a nice feature, but as long as we have away to contact off thread it’s not a big loss. Growing pains right?
3: How often do we need to blog? I’d be interested. Have some projects I want to work on, and could share the skill growth with.
4: Usability testing? I’ve done that. Pinched for time, but I’ll do what I can.
5: besides hurt, maim, kill spam what is involved?
6: I would if my skills were more than hey look I set up word press.
7: *shudder*. I like the thought of SSO and maybe 2FA, but linking accounts… *shudder*

I currently try to maintain my own, but I wouldn’t mind doing some double duty.

    4. Who’s willing to help test?

    5. Who’s willing to possibly help moderate the forums?
I could assist with this as well.

    6. Anyone willing to lend a hand who has expertise in PHP, MySQL, design?
My skills here are not so good.

    7. Should we implement OpenID, login with Twitter?

I’ve narrowed it down to one CMS and 3 possible forum apps. I’m running each on a dedicated dev server for testing. I’m also doing test conversions, feature comparisons, integration review, etc.

I’ll get in touch with each of you that either replied to this thread or contacted me offline to send you the dev URL for final testing and feedback.

So I’d like to have this done before the end of the month.

    2) I haven’t checked EHNet in a long time, so not used PM too.But I am now planning on once again becoming a regular contributor of the forum and in my active days I usually use PMs once or twice a week.

    3) Will blog for sure.

    4) I am.

    5) I am. I always report the spam messages or other offensive stuff I see on EHNet and having a moderator with a different timezone than yours (India) will always help EHNet.

    6) I don’t have an excellent command over PHP but I can certainly help with some little scripts.

    7) Sure. I don’t generally use my social media accounts with other websites but it’ll be good feature for those who do.

    OK… quick update.

As you can tell, because tomorrow is the first of the month, we’re not going to make our end-of-month self-imposed deadline. But that’s OK. Some articles are running behind as well as getting the giveaway for May, but I’m totally focused on this conversion process. This is going to be the backbone of the site for years to come, so putting some of the regular monthly items on hold for a little bit is worth it for the long-term vision.

That being said, I’m close to having a working demo for those who have been giving thoughts in this thread and offline.

    Hang in there,

    Hey All,

As the participants of this thread should now know, I have the live dev site up for testing the new version of EH-Net. If you didn’t get my email, let me know with a PM or email me directly at don ( at ) ethical hacker . net.

It’s pretty darned close to what the real thing will look and act like (unless you guys hate what I’ve done), so hammer away and let me know offline what you think. I thought about going crazy with the design, but then decided to not only go with an even cleaner, minimalist look but also keep our identity as a great destination for professional “white” hats. Thus the design that you’ll see.

If all goes well, I’d like to start porting it over for real sooner rather than later. My goal is to have the new site live before June 1. So as an FYI for anyone else who might read this, I will have to put EH-Net entirely in maintenance mode for hopefully no longer than a couple days. With Monday being a holiday here in the states, this weekend would be the best time to do it. I’ll try my best to keep it live by putting it in a read-only state, but we’ll see how it goes.

I’m confident we won’t lose much, as the test site has a copy of all articles, users and forum threads. The rest of the details of the new site are included in the PM I sent everyone. If you have more specific questions, let me know offline if its sensitive or here if you think its appropriate for everyone’s general knowledge.

What a long, tortuous ordeal in evaluating and testing everything. This has taken months as I made the conscious decision to basically start from scratch. It’s a good thing, as it forced us to grow up into a full-fledged publishing operation instead of just a personal project that took off. Maybe it’s time to get an intern!?!?!  😮

So far so good. No one has reported anything broken. There was an item that had some light shined on it. I’m looking at it but it’s not a show stopper.

As for the functionality and design, no one has commented negatively. I’ll take it!  ;D

For those who have taken a look and created test accounts, tried out the commenting features, etc., keep it up. For those who haven’t had a chance, please give it a shot if you can.

If any of you notice something strange that didn’t happen while first testing the new site, there may be a logical reason for it. We are having the new site pen tested. So don’t freak, but still report anything out of the ordinary.

    We’re close… I can taste it.  😛

With the current forum, you can have your login name be different than your display name. It looks like the display name was brought over as the login name in the new forums. It’s not a big deal, but I was wondering why my normal credentials didn’t work for a second. Just FYI. Otherwise, so far, so good.

I know about the username vs displayname issue. I’m trying to work with the developer of the script that handles the conversion from SMF to phpBB to see what we can do. I’ll keep you all posted.

Also, I added a feature to the new calendar where you can submit events for approval. Try submitting some stuff, and we’ll see how it goes.

    Thanks,
    Don

I threw in the small side column on the right-hand side which is now a lot like the old site, but with the modern, slick look of the new site. I also decided to put the forum items in the new column. That way, when viewing the forums, I can make them disappear without affecting the content items on the left.

What do you think? Too much info? Too busy? Too much like the old site? Or did I hit the mark with a blend of the old site functionality with newer ways to get more content in a single glance?

I also made a new top logo image for EH-Net.

Great job so far Don. My only thing is everything on the right side looks kind of scrunched in maybe moving it to the other side or making both sides even would help just my two cents.

I will more than likely make some changes after we go live, but I’m satisfied enough with the progress of testing the foundational stuff that I can start moving over the production site. So lots of pre-planning stuff to do, but keep an eye out for the forum going into maint mode soon.

I may send you some extra messages on the side if I need some feedback or help.

    Thanks all,
    Don

    Hey All,

If you’re seeing this message or were emailed of a new post in this thread, then you can see we’re live.

Since there are a million little things on the punch list, I’ll still consider this beta. Please send me a PM or email me with issues, thoughts… or even kudos!

You should be able to login using your old login name and password instead of the display name like it was on the test site. Let me know if you hit anything strange on that front. But all of you should also still have all of your PMs, and thus clearly private messages are part of the new EH-Net.

I’m aware of most of the issues like:

    – We changed the image folder location but kept the structure the same. So we still need to edit old articles, content, etc.
    – The Calendar App we use it completely different. So hang in there while we populate it with events and details.
    – There are numerous issues with templates, design layout, CSS. Let’s start simple… I’m pretty much set on the overall style, but the forums inside the site can be changed. Let me know if you like the style first before we get into the details of each small issue.
    – The delay in getting the site live was due to the hosting company having trouble getting in touch with GeoTrust and working out their automated setup of the SSL certs. Since the entire site uses https now, some things couldn’t be implemented or tested until that happened. That being said, some browsers treat secure sites differently. Our ads are coming from an ad server that also has its own SSL cert and thus come from https URLs. Nonetheless, Firefox seems to be the only one doing what I want.
    – Integration between the CMS side and the forums is there. But I ‘m temporarily disabling cross-posting between the 2 for old articles. New articles like the Black Hat USA Giveaway should work fine. Let me know if it doesn’t.
    – I have the external URL redirects done from the old articles to the new. Next on the list is redirects from the old forum to the new.

Plenty of other stuff I’m not listing as it would be too long. But here we go.

Thanks for your continued efforts in giving feedback,
    Don

    Congratulations, Don!

The little bit I’ve seen so far looks great! I’m glad to have EH-Net back…

I’m glad to see things worked out well in the end. This is definitely a significant improvement.

The only minor items I noticed so far are:
The search at the top only searches the CMS content and not the forums. You have to follow the forums link and then use that search. Maybe add a drop-down to the main search to choose between searching CMS or the forums, just to be a bit more intuitive.

Signatures were carried over, but they’re not included by default (you need to manually choose to attach a signature). I’m not sure if I missed an option somewhere.

Google searches are obviously off for the old results. Is there a mapping between the old and new? It might be relatively simple to script redirects to keep that flowing smoothly.

User Control Panel > Edit posting defaults > Attach my signature by default.

The “View New Posts” feature also seems to be somewhat broken. I see the topics I have read when I click. However, when I came back a couple hours later, they were gone. Is there a delay in when that functionality indexes the forums per user?

    I was getting worried too!
Nice job Don, it feels more “2013”… 😉

Thanks for everyone that was worried. It shows that what we do has merit.

@ziggy_567 – “View New Posts” is a phpBB thing. It was explained in their forums that it works better for those that logout then log back in. Like most of you, I don’t really logout. I’ll look for alternatives. I hate messing with custom code, because when an update comes out, it leads to a lot more work.

Speaking of which, sorry for the downtime Sunday night. I was trying to put in place a Recent Forum Posts module. The code came from the same source as the Recent Forum Topics module that works fine, so stupid me, I decided to throw it in there without testing on my dev site. It ended up not releasing memory, and I in essence DOSed myself. Didn’t notice it for a few hours as I tried to have a little family time on Sunday. Oops.

New Question… I’m not sold on a couple tings and am willing to re-evaluate.

Design of the forums – I might play around with that. So if you visit and it’s different, that’s me playing with designs. What do you think of it so far (minus the little things like not seeing the white icons on the white bg)?

Social Icons – Looks nice but I’m not hot on some of them requiring that you have an account on a separate service. Looking into it and might change it.

On the other hand, I’m totally digging the new calendar app. Love the look. Only complaint is that it doesn’t integrate with phpBB. I may have to do that manually with just simple links and not worry about fancy icons with post counts or integrated per item comment sections. What do you think?

Images – WP has the images buried in a folder deep in the structure of the site. I have some htaccess locks on some of it. Plus I wanted to have shorter links from not only an efficiency angle but also for better SEO. Speaking of SEO, I’ve learned a lot during the transition. Even though we showed up everywhere in Google, I found numerous ways to do even better in Google as well as Bing, Yahoo, etc. So it is unfortunate, but I will be going through each and every article that has ever been published on EH-Net and upgrading images locations, tags, content, links, etc. Some things I can automate, other take a human eye.

Thanks for the support during this. I hope I made the right choices along the way. If not, we’ll jump off that bridge when we get there. In the meantime, keep the opinions and punch list items coming.

    Don

Maybe I missed this but, how do I just see the forums and not pane on the left with my avatar, news items, calendar, etc? On the previous forum I believe it was just matter of pointing the URL to the right location. It’s just a bit frustrating to have to horizontal scroll everytime just to center the discussions on the browser, especially on a small screen laptop.

Doesn’t exist anymore. This way it is a consistent look throughout the entire site from the article side to the forums to the calendar and everything in between.

@don: can we get some more space for forum? Can we please setup it as a complete forum on it’s subdomain?

    Hey All,

For helping me during the transition, I need another thing from you. I need for you to accept some prizes. I know, this is a hard task. 😉

I have Mile2 and eLearnSecurity courses to offer up. A few have accepted, but I have a few more slots to fill. Who’s interested?

I wouldn’t mind doing an eLearnSecurity course. Which ones are up for the taking?

Also, thanks for fixing the issue with Chrome browsers not showing checkboxes. Much appreciated.

@don I’m already doing the eWPT, otherwise I’d have jumped at the chance.

Cool. Well my web-app-hacking-fu is a bit weak, so I wouldn’t mind doing that one.
