OHM2013 LogoOHM2013: Observe. Hack. Make.

Europe’s largest outdoor hacker conference of 2013 takes place in the Netherlands from July 31 to August 4, 2013. OHM2013 is an international technology and security conference in a unique form. Five days of technology, ideological debates and hands-on tinkering will take place in Geestmerambacht, The Netherlands. OHM2013 continues the tradition of the four-yearly Dutch outdoor technology conferences. OHM2013 is the largest such hackercamp in Europe in 2013 and will attract thousands of visitors.

Since 1989, the international internet community has been getting together on a series of conferences to discuss the state of contemporary technology, the future of it and the sociological and political consequences of their work. Previous editions of this legendary event were Hacking at Random (HAR2009), What The Hack (WTH2005), Hackers at Large (HAL2001), Hacking in Progress (HIP’97), Hacking at the End of the Universe (HEU1993) and the Galactic Hacker Party in 1989.

The participants vary from students and people with personal interests to researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs of whom many are widely recognized as the best in their field.

The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the average level of knowledge is high and outside of the official lectures the site is buzzing with energy, ideas and all kinds of activity.

Issues such as privacy (can an electronic passport be read without your knowledge?), security (how easy is it to listen in on GSM conversations?), integrity (is the result of an electronic voting system to be trusted?) are some of the topics that have been addressed at previous events, long before they entered the public discussion.

The people this closely involved in the technology around them often find it hard to get heard, even though these topics are becoming more popular in the traditional press. OHM2013 is a place to freely discuss these issues with like minded people from over the world.

At this event we expect some interesting new discoveries and observations about the technology we see around us in our everyday lives. How will the world change when we can print objects? How can we improve our lives by using bionics? Are self-driving cars safe from attacks? How does social media influence our social structures, now and in the future? How can we deal as a society with surveillance and censorship?

Call for Participation

OHM2013 is a non-profit community event by volunteers where every visitor is both participant and volunteer. Apart from all the logistics of organising the event, people who have interesting research or ideas are urged to share them by giving a presentation or demonstration. Topics may vary from security, hardware, software, to people and society, privacy and art.

During the event, there will be several parallel tracks of lectures and demonstrations. The theory can be put into practice with hands-on workshops, from coding to soldering.

If you are reading this and have something interesting to share, you can enter a submission via the website: https://ohm2013.org/cfp/
