Google acquires VirusTotal

Google it would appear have acquired VirusTotal.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/09/07/google_buys_virustotal/
http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/07/google-acquires-online-virus-malware-and-url-scanner-virustotal/
For those not familiar with VirusTotal it offers a service to scan and analyse suspicious files and URLs, againt over 40 AntiVirus engines. VirusTotal is often used to test custom exploit payloads against (despite it being a quick way to get the lifespan of your payload reduced).

I wonder why Google would acquire VirusTotal. There seems to be a reason they aren't willing to share...
Any ideas?

Huge news, I use VT frequently, and I hope as they say, google puts its power behind the company without infringing on the way the system works.

Will they continue to submit signatures to AV companies as VT has been thought/known to do?
