I recently got some interest in lock picking. I have not ordered picks yet but I will soon. I just wanted to share this video, its 2 hours and it tells you most of the stuff you need to know about locks and lock picking. My favorite place to get tools is http://www.lockpickersmall.com/ I'm really happy with the South Ord MPXS-14, although I think it's a little big sometimes (Only really use about 5 picks out of it). Now I just have to find time to watch the video. |

I'm currently going through it, but since I'm working on some other things as well, the review will probably take quite a while. However, I can already tell that's a really nice book and so far, I really like it.

That looks like a nice set. I tend to only use the small diamond, the small feeler, the bent wrench, and sometimes a key extractor. I've talked to a sales rep (met at a local security meeting), and he says that's usually what happens, buy a big kit, and use only a few out of them. |

I just got my set a few weeks ago. I bought a Master Lock to mess around with and without knowing anything, I popped it in about 20 minutes. I ordered the Syngress book already and plan to get into it in a couple of weeks.

They actually have a pretty cool locksmith school out of Kentucky that a few guys when i was in the Navy were sent to cause we needed to know how to get into safes on the ship.
Anyways there is some pretty cool stuff they learned like doors with cypher locks on them you just don't even deal with the trying to break the combination but use a long thin piece of metal to slip under the door and open it up from the inside.
The school was pretty intense with them going over everything from safe's to door locks.

Depending on where you got them, you might be able to get individual replacements. I've been taking mine to meetings in the area (ArbSec, 2600, etc) and some of the people have bent my small hook. But the place I got mine from sells individual ones for less than $5.00. Expensive to a point, but less than buying a whole new set. |

Picks are like peckers....if you break it you are probably doing it wrong. That being said, it is not hard to bend/break them while learning.

I haven't had too much problem. But I know the basics of picking already. Have for a while. However too many people only know what they've seen on tv, and see them jammed every which way.
I'm trying to start a TOOOL chapter in my area, and we had our first meeting this week. Most of the people there, were picking for the first time. They were going every which way with the picks and bending them.
We kept stopping them when we could, but with 9 of them, and 2 of us, it was a little hard, and things would be getting bent. Sometimes they'd go back to bending even after being corrected once or twice.
