My parents are so paranoid about the internet that they have set a timer somewhere to the outlet powering the router making it fully turn off after a certain time. i cannot get to this timer as it appears to be hidden, and they refuse to keep this router on 24/7. the only thing i noticed that they did, was that they set up a hidden router, and a third router with a fake person's name on it. I have tried various programs such as hydra, aircrack, cygwin, wireshark, brutus, slitaz, and routerpassview, on my computer and theirs, none of it has worked, and i know for sure that they have no idea how to secure their router against these programs (they denied the help themselves when flaws were pointed out), so it has to be something i'm doing. i cannot find the physical location of the two "extra" routers so i cannot press any buttons. I need some sort of complete idiot's guide on how to hack either route. i really do not want to have to go to my college campus at 11 at night just to look up homework and do online tests. is there anyone that can possibly walk me through this? contact me if possible.

Let me guess, your parents put a timer on the internet not for security reasons, but for parenting reasons, and that "homework at 11" really means playing WOW or surfing porn.  I don't think you're going to find much help here...

If the router is on a timer that physically powers it off, then hacking the router won't solve your problem.  If it's just a built-in parental control feature, you may be able to hack and change it.  Of course, your parents may realize what you did and just throw the damn thing away to spite you.

The other two routers you're seeing probably belong to your neighbors.  You should leave them alone.

It's not his router and he doesn't have permission, so what he is asking is illegal.

Kudos for research skills though, many kids I talk to don't know the first thing about how to research a problem. As for your router issues, Try Harder.  Smiley

I think they more like blocking your access than worried about some 1337 hacker that gonna try crack your wireless.

If they wre worried about someone trying hack it why not just turn it off when they not using it?

@MaXe lol simple but affective answer Tongue

What makes it even better is that he posted it in the Ethical Hacktivism Board! Wrong on 2 fronts... 1. This doesn't seem like a great charitable organization or just cause to support and 2. Pretty damned sure it's not ethical, seeing as how your parents pay the bills!

I'm a parent and so are most of the 'professionals' that are members here on EH-Net, so forgive us for poking a little fun.

If you'd really like some help, just PM me your parents phone number, and I'd be more than happy to have a little chat to try to set 'them' straight.  Wink

hahah if my parents would of done this to me I would of figured it out. Like someone said the power is off after a certain time. What you need to do is see if you could ping the router after that time. What they might of done also is just block your mac address from teh machine you are working on.

Are you sure it's just your computer or laptop. If that's the case just chance your mac address...

I have really enjoyed reading this, but one question I have while everyone else has made suggestions or just laughed on this post (which should go against what this forum is really for) is to suggest you just talk to your parents, explain in a logical manner why you should be able to bypass this particular security feature and plead your case to them. I am positive if you have legitimate case they will understand. On the other hand, I hope you have enjoyed using the “ethical hacking” tools to do some “testing” on your home network…. You could probably use this as another note to how well your parents have done securing their home network  Smiley

@longhorn - so you're telling me it's not nice to poke at someone who's very obviously trying to get ethical people to help them with an unethical task?

Seriously?

I have the sneaking suspicion that the parents locked it down for a reason, thus the OP (original poster) trying to circumvent their rules...  Most of us have been on these forums long enough to spot these posts ALMOST before the OP even pressed 'Post'   Wink
