I have to agree with what most others have said. An intelligent person can be taught the technical skills needed in a position, but you can't teach someone how to be personable.
I started out in this field after tending bar for nearly 10 years, and deciding on a career change. I've been told flat out that I've won jobs over more technically qualified applicants because of my inter-personal skills and proven dedication to customer service.
In the meantime, because of having these opportunities, my skill set has grown considerably, making me even more marketable. (not to toot my own horn, or anything
)
Also, I know that p0et started this thread nearly a year ago...how has the job search gone?

Whoa! I didn't see these replies a couple years ago until now. I'm actually just revamping my resume (again) as I've just been pigeon-holed onto a team at work which has absolutely no room for career advancement.
After your suggestions, I went ahead and sent out the resume and was successful in a job posting which I applied to. It didn't land me into an IT security job (which is what I'm trying to do right now) but it got me in the door. I've been shuffled around between branches for the past 3 or 4 years but now I'm stuck.
I see that I never did receive an answer to my original question here though. Should I include a "Professional Affiliations" section in my resume? Is it okay to include the Ethical Hacker Network if I have contributed with an article/video as well as include the SANS Advisory Board and that I'm an "Internet Safety Advocate" for WHOA (
www.haltabuse.org
)? I'm guessing I should leave off others such as my association with the Power & Sailing Squadron and Surfrider Organization?
Thanks!

I would say if you have a linkin page add the information to that. Then when you apply include a link to your linkin page. That way if they want to find out more they will take a look.
I think it also depends on how much room your have on your CV. I have always been told it should not be more than two pages.

Thanks for the reply. I was just looking at Linkedin the other day. Do you guys have Ethical Hacker Network on your profiles? I wonder if there's a proper way to post a "recommendation/endorsement" on a Linkedin page for their contribution to EH-Net.

There is an EH-Net group on LI you can join. I know a few of us are on it.

Have you sat down as a relative newcommer and tried to wade through this forum searching for those gems of info? I've been spending an hour a night for the last few weeks going through these forums to get as much useful gen as possible and I don't think i'm even 1/2 way through yet. Have already taken 15 A4 pages of notes, references, books to read and web links!!!

Yes, and there are still things I find that surprise me, almost a year later. However I gave up trying to read the whole forum. Instead I started using the search function and google dorking.

Trouble is, i'm too new at this to know what to put in the search box.
It's a long slow job going through this lot though i've set myself a date limit of 2 years. But the slow relentless ploughing through is giving me all sorts of usefull info as well as (currently) 20 subjects that i'd like to look into a lot deeper.
I've got years of study ahead of me and i'm looking forward to it
