Start by searching these forums for the answer to your question.

I think we need a board titled 'Newcomers' or 'New Members' or something similar where we can copy all of the posts that answer the above question.

I don't know your background but if you're completely new to I.T...then I suggest

- studying for the A+ and Network + exams
- learn about TCP/IP
- google "ethical hacker, penetration testing"..and just read anything and everything about the field.
- go to dice.com, simplyhired.com..type in penetration tester, vulnerability assessment.. and look at what type of experience and knowledge they are looking for.

First off, welcome to EH-Network!

I think Jamie and YuckTheFankees summed it up pretty well.

Above the "have fun" part, which I think is really important I would add one personal advice:
To gain knowledge make it a habit to ask yourself the question "How does this work" and try to answer/research it yourself. Researching by yourself first, will help you to constantly learn new things. At least this is what I always try do do  Grin

Hacking is about getting down to how things work, reading about them, learn everything there is about them -> therefore devoting TONS of time  Wink

Again welcome to EH-Network.  Looking forward to read more from you!

Hi Abmart,

Welcome to EthicalHacker.net. I couldn't agree with BillV anymore. The best place to start is the search function. This site has been around for years and a lot of questions have been answered. To attempt to help answer your question, the best place to start is to cover a few threads where new comers have asked the same questions and have received responses. Below are some links:

There is other topics threads out there but I pointed you to a few of the good ones. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Good luck!

@ gromic,

That's probably one of the best things anyone can do. I'm currently reading about computer forensics books, and as I go through the book, I make a list of the terms, commands, tools, or concepts I don't really understand, then I go back and researched them further. It's validates what you have learned and read.
