Hi all,
Am Manikanth from Bangalore-India.I was going through the forum for quite some time and amazed to see people giving good guidance and carrier path. Please spare 2 mins to read this and suggest me.
I am having currently 5 years of experiance in IT but not any of the technical stuff my daily work is doing prodcut installs(proprietery) and setting up environment for customer.Like java, weblog and some scrap.Since a year am working hard on security to change my domain and recently cleared CEH v7 and ECSA .But frankly speaking i have only thearitical knowledge then practical. But i have all over all concepts .
I am having below skills :
CCNA,CCNP skills.(including idea about various protocols)-Basics
Programming skills (C,c++,java,J2ee,Batch scripting )-Basics can analyze code.
Linux-Very Basics.
Good idea about most of the security concepts.
I had quit my job because am not happy with the work i am doing and want really try hard something challenging like OSCP .If i work hard for 2 months daily 10 hours can i get through this. And is the skills what i have is enough as a pre-requisites? Please let me know am in process of arranging money to register for this cource.I have a week time now to register for this what additional skills i require ?Please guide me.I don't have any one to guide so please your suggestions will be very important to me.
-Thanks,
Manikanth

@manikanth -
I'd say if your description of your current skills is accurate, and you devote yourself to study, as you're planning to, that you should be able to successfully complete the OSCP in that amount of time.
I think that as long as you have basic concepts of programming and Linux under your belt, you'll be able to grasp what's needed, and come up to speed quickly enough to succeed.
I wish you well, and let us know how you progress!

Basic SQL should be enough to start with, and get you through. There's enough material in the course to help you along.

Hello Manikanth,
I'm going to second Hayabusa here in saying if you study enough during the 60 days of lab access, you should be able to get through it. 10 hours a day is a good amount of time to be committing. Your background is great having Networking, Basic Linux and Programming Experience. The theoretical knowledge is OK, you'll gain the practical knowledge in the lab. Knowing about the types of attacks out there versus knowing how to perform the types of attacks is a different scale. Your amount of time and dedication to the lab, and studying will make you prevail - just expect pain along the way.
Be sure to be open to purchasing any extra needed lab time! I personally had to go back and purchase an extra 10 or 15 after my initial 60 days in the lab just to make sure I felt up for the challenge. It's a great course and even if you don't walk out of it an OSCP, you'll certainly have a whole lot more knowledge than you had walking in.

Hey Manikanta..
I hail from the same city, Bangalore. Good to see that people are getting into security field
You are at the right place (EHnet) for guidance
I think other members gave u a good insight into what u need for OSCP.
From the syllabus of OSCP it's clear that the course is more about network security than about Web App's security. So your CCNP level skills will come handy and other things u might need will be: Some basic skill in scripting language(Python/Perl/PHP), Able to read(understand) Assembly language code, Linux skills and before you enroll, boot ur BackTrack and try to get comfortable with some important security tools so that when you get on the labs, You can straight away start practicing than wasting valuable time trying to figure out how things work
And most importantly, get yourself ready to do lots and lots of research on own, manage your time... and always TRY HARDER
I am planning to do OSCP some time around early 2012, so keep posting your progress and I might hassle you about OSCP when I am ready to take up the certification

if you are not into any scripting language try learning Python.. it's easy, elegant and most imp' many security tools like W3AF, Scapy, SET are coded in Python. I think in OSCP you are expected to write your own scripts to automate stuff.
Dive into Python got a free ebook, good source to start with Python.

Hi Manikanta,
Next to "dive into python" what hurtl0cker mentioned, two sources for python I found helpful were:
1. A Byte of Python
http://www.swaroopch.com/notes/Python
-> basic intro to python
2. Learn Python the hard way
http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/
-> more for a practical basic intro to python

@gromic- that second python link is one I'd never seen before. Not only will it help folks learn python, but they also have free books on other popular languages (ie - ruby), so it's a cool resource. Thanks for sharing.
I'll be using those to refresh myself, as you always learn new things from others' coding styles and processes.

'Python for Hackers' I just ran into this videos last week while I was googling for 'Scapy' stuff. Two videos, spanning around 1hr each. The content is awesome, straight to the point.
gets your hands on 'Scapy' too.
