Make BackTrack?

Hi all, I am redoing my computers and so on, and so forth, one thing I want to do is dual boot Windows 7 and Backtrack. But then I thought, wouldnt it be nice to get some linux experience? Is it ~~possible~~, likely to install say ubuntu and install all of the tools found in backtrack?

Yes. It's possible (that's why Backtrack is one of many such distros - the Blackbuntu thread, Samurai, and others.)

Just need to install, then learn how to find tools, install repositories, etc.

I have many of the Backtrack tools loaded in openSuSE, too...

yes you can do it.for example you can download linux version metasploit and install it on ubuntu but why do you install backtrack on your local computer you can vmware or virtual box on your windows 7 and boot from what ever os you want! Grin

ive done that before, it becomes a crutch. I end up only using it to run tools, never really to learn anything. One day I may need to install a new tool on linux one day, it would be nice to have had some experience with it.

Are there any good tutorials? I'll take any, but i dont need a step by step. i know how to compile and install some linux programs from the command line, but I know there are repository issues and stuff and in the past i have just resulted to using the gui, which can dl the necessary ones automatically.

I usually start with: "What tools do I use the most?"
And go from there. In almost every instance where I've started with say Ubuntu, I've gone and immediately loaded NMAP and metasploit. Then go from there and start tossing on my prefered password cracker and so on. The beauty of Backtrack is that it has so many tools to choose from, but that can also be a hinderance. You can get distracted by other shiny things and never really master the ones that you will use the most.

Anyone ever have success creating their own LiveCD Linux? I'd love to get my tools configured just the way I want them, and create a LiveCD of it.

Truthfully, I dont use Live Cd's as such anymore. With having to deal with the CD-ROM to use it, it becomes a hindrance. I'd much rather burn the L-CD to ISO and use a copy from my hard disk.

I don't use them on actual optical media, as all 3 of my laptops are lacking any type of CD/DVD drive. I still use LiveCD ISOs on USB flash drives extensively, so I would be interested in creating my own LiveCD.

Same as eth3real, just utilize the ISO on USB. its fun when you do that to a client that thinks they are blocking boot from USB on their systems. Cheesy
