Haven't read it, don't know anything about it, it just popped up on my radar today, but thought it might be a good post for the "i want to be a 1337 h4x0r, where do i start?" crowd...

i've read it and it's a good book to have an overview of Pentesting. A lot of screenshots help to understand the basics. But the  chapters are very short and no subject is covered in depth. For ewample only 12 pages on nessus/metasploit...
So the beginner will have to go for another book very quickly.

I wonder if Syngress does a bulk discount. I have a list of books that I'd like from them. Adding this one to the list. Wink

EH-netters get a discount when purchasing books from Syngress.  Don posted this last month:

20% discount: http://www.ethicalhacker.net/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,54/topic,8048.0/

Now that I read that thread again though, not clear whether the discount is just for those new books or for any books bought on Syngress' website.

Yeah, I saw that, but I found it was still cheaper to get them on Amazon.

I ended up buying 2 books today, The Basics of Hacking and Penetration Testing and Coding for Penetration Testers.

$43 total and free shipping on Amazon, I think I did okay. Smiley

That is exactly what the book is about if you want to start and know nothing then I recommended this book.

Just went on another book spree, couple of JavaScript books, SE: Art of Human Hacking and the Web Security Testing Cookbook.  Threw this new "basics" one on the pile for the heck of it.  I always have friends asking me if I have a good book for them to start with, figure this might be a good one to have on the shelf.  Impressions to come...

I don't like the sound of the "basics" part as I like to learn something new all the time so this isn't a book I will be getting.

TheXero, even though it's "the basics", it may have some introductory information about attack vectors you're not familiar with. It was just published this year, so it may still have some interesting information. I just got my copy in the mail today, I'll let you all know what I think of it.

I have this book and I would say its for anyone who never done any security I been doing security for about 4 month now and I knew everything in the book already. If you want break into security and are total new and want to start then this book is good. so all the people who say I don't know where to start then buy this book. It does not go into a lot of technical details its more into and you expected to build on it.
