Learning hacking with virtual machines

Hiya guys, just found the forum today and it's my first post so firstly hello to all you hackers Grin

I have just started an IT course and have been looking at ethical hacking for the past few days, I guess the best place for me to start is with simulating a network with some virtual machines, someone on here suggested using vm player and VMX Builder.I have ony used virtualbox thus far, but I cant find any useful links to download VMX Builder, seems the website is down, is this little app a necessity or just one way to go about it.

is VMX builder still in use, or was it retired? VMware is a constantly moving target for their software. So I guess the question is, how old was the post?

Personally in my personal lab, I use VirtualBox. On my work Lab, I'm using VMware Player. Honestly, I prefer my VirtualBox.

http://www.easyvmx.com/ (as tturner mentioned) or you can continue using Virtual Box or VMware server instead of VMplayer. Here are some free images that can save you some time setting up your own images: http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/vmware/ (obviously no Microsoft images)

first of all, welcome! mastering vmware and virtualbox can be a real pain! vmware has some trouble with linux when you update your kernel, converting images so they can be used by both is almost not doable. not even speaking of getting an workstation image to work on an esxi server....wow...but once you get the things you want to do done, it are the greatest products in the world...nothing beats hosting your own hacklab with multiple images where you can work on your pivoting skills to penetrate deep into the victims network...

download a few hosts from thoughtpolice and experiment away...have fun!

Hi and Welcome. If you need some Virtual Machine images try to download metasploitable is good for learn, and you can try damn vulnerable linux too.
