Hey gang,

I was wondering if anyone else looked in to the Hackers for Charity Volunteer program. I heard about it back around Shmoocon (I didn't go), but it was on one of the podcasts. Basically Johnny Long was looking for volunteers to help with the work over there.

Anyway I tried to to sign up the other day, filled out the forms and hit send. And I'm just wondering what I may have gotten myself in to. Trouble with being impulsive Smiley.

Actually, I'm more interested in how long it takes to hear back, and what kind of work others that volunteered are doing or did. Personal experiences and the like.

If they're interested, they'll contact you. If not, don't expect any answer at all  Smiley (I sent a volunteer request like 3 months ago, no response at all, as far as I can recall.)

This doesn't mean you won't be contacted though, so I wish you good luck and I'll cross my fingers for you  Wink

I had the same experience as MaXe. No response for almost 6 months now.

That's rather sad to hear. I mean I actually like the work he's doing, and thought it would be nice to help out. Some of the other things I volunteer in leave me feeling empty inside, and thought that helping in anyway I could with Hackers for Charity would let me use my primary skills and feel like I'm making a difference in the world.

I helped out back when they were first getting started. Did some web app testing and such. There is a google group (or groups). You may be able to freely join.

I actually applied a month ago... no response.. it seems from his recent post he is going through tough times and it seems they keep the volunteer base close knit.

hehe same, not bitter but disappointed that there was no response at all. Do they really get so many requests that they can't set an auto responder for those they don't choose?  Grin

If you are getting ignored shoot me an email - I talked to Johnny at Shmoo as well and became a part of the org a couple months after:
Email me here: mubix@hackersforcharity.com (email host has been eating emails recently)

If I don't respond within a day hit me up on mubix@hak5.org

Thanks Mubix,

Mail sent to you. Is this going to expand into his InfoSec without Borders project?

Ya, basically InfoSec w/o Borders is going to be a larger initiative with more corporate, and group involvement. Responded to your email and for anyone else who wants to get involved, Please go to the contact us page on: http://infosecwithoutborders.org/ since there are a couple ways to get involved. (Maybe you can get your company to send you to Uganda to help out, paid)

Plus we are also looking for groups, hacker spaces, etc to help out as well.

If you don't get responses, ping me directly and I stir the pot a bit.

Infosec w/o borders sounds like a really good idea reading over the website. I will pass link onto some other and get it added to the YPISG http://ypisg.bcs.org/ website
