I'm currently a security analyst in the private sector and would one day like to make the jump to defending our country. What skills, experience and or certifications look good for a position in the government.

For the best info read this entire document: http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/857001m.pdf for the quick answer go to the bottom of page 92 and read on from there.

I am guessing that cyber warfare means government jobs?
No. You can be hired without prior military experience. It helps if you have it but doesn't mean you won't get it either. Security clearance is another helpful thing in getting a job with the government. If you got that then they are more likely to hire you because it cuts down on expenses and time to do background checks.

There are only a couple of parts of Computer Network Operations (CNO) that require you be active duty, and that is because those positions are actually taking part in Cyber Warfare. Outside of that, you do not even need to find a "Govt" job, as plenty of Defense Contractors have contracts withing Cyber Security for the US Gov. The one requirement you MUST have as a prior is a clearance, and typically you will need at least a DoD Secret. To get into the more sensitive realms you will need a higher clearance.

Look at companies like:
Lockheed Martin
General Dynamic
Northrop Grumman
Ball Aerospace
........I am sure there a lot more as well.

Good luck!

a clean record, low debt to income ratio, no foreign involvement/travel you don't mind disclosing,U.S. citizenship (includes spouse), and a good recollection of where you have lived and worked for the past 10 years will cover the clearance piece.  A CISSP covers most of the management positions, add a Cisco cert and MCSE and that will cover most of the technician positions.  That's your basic compliance/reporting and sysadmin roles.  If you want to work CND then CEH covers 4 of the 5 CND roles identified in 8570.
