I understand some of this was for the other guy that posted in here but most of what you guys said went right over my head...LOL.  I need to get the bascis of this stuff.  I know what VM is but don't have it installed yet, just played with it at school.

So let me ask again cause this could derail the project for the time being.  Will I need a seperate internet connection? Money is tight and my wife doesn't understand what I am doing in the first place and adding a second line would require me to remove one of my nuts.

Probably not.

There are a few different ways you could do it, but I've actually created 2 separate business networks using 1 dsl line (my company and another company) with the DSL router, and 2 firewalls.

Do you really want to break into your network, or do you just want the experience of breaking into a network?

I want to learn it.  Since I am attending school for Network Security and Computer Forensics I feel that I should know this stuff.

Even though I have a internship at a local Computer Forensics company I doubt he will hire me cause he is a one man show.  So I have to keep my options open and increase my knowledge of the fileds I am attending school for.

If you can get the permission, buy this book

It'll go a long way in helping you reach your goals.

I'll have to try testing later tonight, if I have time. But a cheap home router, linksys, with a box or 2 in the lan ports, and your attack box in the wan ports might work.

The problem with doing it across the internet, your service provider might turn you off. Explain that one. Yeah, I'm paying x a month for a second line that I can't use.
