Good day to u all, i´m new here, so please forgive me if my post isn´t where it has to be.

I need orientation about certification, i'm a fellow who has experience in the networking line, but i want to learn about security, so i'm new in that field.

Some friends has told me about some certs, C|EH, CISSP and CISM, i'm trying to learn about them but now i'm confused, i don't know where to start, 'cause like i said, i'm new in that area. Please give me an advice.

Where to start???

Best place to start is probably with the Security+. It will give you the foundation you need to get in to the more in depth areas of security. Here is the link to it: http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/security.aspx

If you take this and pass before the end of this year it will be considered a lifetime cert that you won't need to renew. After that it will need to be renewed every 3 years if you want to claim the credential down the road. After security+ there is a long list of certs you could take. It really depends on your areas of interest.

For pentesting there are: CEH, eCPPT, GPEN, OSCP, and heorot.net certs and courses. (not all inclusive)

For a more broad range of security there is: SSCP, GSEC, SCNP, CISSP, and many more.

For OS Specific there is: MCSE:S, GCWN, GCUX, and many more.

For network specific there is: CCNA: sec, CCSP, JNCIS-SEC, GCFW, GCIA, CTP, and more

For web app sec there is: GWAPT, and more I am sure.

For forensic there is: CHFI, GCFA, and more.

For management/auditing there is: CISSP, CISA, CISM, and more

So like I said depends on what peaks your interest. Some of the certs require experience to become fully certified and certain criteria needs to be met. I would do some research in what area of security interests you most but would recommend starting with the Security+ first to get a foundation and go from there. If the Security+ sounds good to you then check out this book: http://www.amazon.com/CompTIA-Security-Certified-Ahead-SY0-201/dp/1439236364/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285625425&sr=8-1

This was an excellent study guide for me to pass.

Hope this is helpful.

Well man, if a had a kind of grey perspective now i'm totally dark, lol, i didn't know there were so many certs.

Searching about security took me to the CompTia certs, before you told me, but, if u tell me is a good starting point in the field of IT security so i'll start to studying it.

Thank you man

Maybe if you tell us what kind of IT experience, you said that you are new but we do not know if you are new in IT or security

Well, i'm CCNA certified, now i'm trying to get a Linux cert, i know about ISO 27000 (i'm an Intern Auditor), and also know about servers in Win and Linux, so like i said, im a Networking dude who wants to Start in the Security area, the only think i know about that is the ISO 27000, but just did it, so i'm new in the security field. So my question is this:

Where do i have to start to understand about security?
If a want to do a cert in that area, what cert is know as the basic or maybe as the elemental?

I want material, but i need to know what kind of material (related to cert) buy? The book kriscamaro68 told me i think was ok to start, but do u have another opinion?

Please help me.

I would think that that book will be enough to pass the security+ but Syngress also makes a good book. syngress.com is a great resource for security books. There is also many video vendors out there. cbtnuggets.com, cccure.com, cccure.org, careeracademy.com, quickcert.com, for books there is Syngress as I mentioned, Wiley, Sybex, O'reilly. All are good resources for security and for certs. Also for any security cert that starts with a g you'll want to check sans.org, and giac.com for material. Again this all depends on where you want to take your career. Either way start with security+ and go from there.
