Screencasting software
«
on:
September 01, 2010, 01:37:38 PM »
Hi,
I will have to do many security training sessions soon at work and in a high school near where I live. I would like to record myself working on my computer. For example, record how I scan a network using nmap. You know, the kind of videos we get from Offensive Security and the like.
I have seen many on the internet. I don't mind paying a few dollars for a good one, but the best things in life are free!
I run Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 and Backtrack 4 at home. I also want to have the option of recording my voice at the same time.
So what software would you recommend me to use?
Thanks

I'd always go with Camtasia, but if you want free, check out CamStudio (Windows) or Xvidcap (Linux).

Thanks, but Xvidcap seems quite old (last update in 2006)...
Same with Istanbul (2007)
http://live.gnome.org/Istanbul
I don't know about recordmydesktop...
http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/about.php
What about Wink?
http://www.debugmode.com/wink/
Or should I use something like Camtasia on Windows and record Linux stuff over a VM?

I typically do that regardless of the OS I'm recording. I use Win7 for my host.

I have good experience with Camtasia as well. Can't check it right now, but I think VMware (Workstation) also comes with a feature where you can record your vm screens.

camtasia is pretty expensive, but if you have the budget it's worth it. All my vids I typically do on my mac with iShowU HD. It's like 30$ and worth every penny. For linux, the last set i did with recordmydesktop and it worked well. I didn't do audio with it, so I can't speak to that, but I can point you to vids that I did with iShowU and recordmydesktop and you can decide for yourself:
recordmydesktop (did low res, can do higher):

ishowuHD: (hd res for full screen)

Comparison of screencasting software
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_screencasting_software
I used to be a fan of Wink. It's a free tutorial creation software for both Windows and Linux.
Now I use DemoCreator for PC and ScreenFlow for MAC.
