8GB should be more than enough. How many VMs do you need at the same time and what for?

That's what I was wondering.. Roll Eyes

So you need to run a W2K8 virtual network with 5 machines all at the same time you want to study for the CEH and run VMs for that as well?

@awesec you beat me to the question

@firstbitdrv
My laptop has a core duo, so I only have 2 processors, and 4 gigs of ram. Most of the virtuals are built with 512m of ram. However I found I only needed 2 or 3 up at a time, which didn't hurt me too much. (I think bt4 got 1 gig).

Guys, I don't know what I would need (of VMs) while studying CEH.

Also I guess I would need the laptop for the bluetooth module right?

To properly study for CEH, you need 3 systems (and no, they don't need to all be running at the same time, but with your 8GB of memory that shouldn't be a problem):

- A windows attacking machine
- A linux attacking machine
- a victim machine

You only need to become familiar with the tools involved (stick to paying close attention to the primary tools - or the tools that get more attention).

Nowhere in the objectives is anything mentioned about bluetooth.

http://eccouncil.org/certification/exam_information/ceh_exam_312-50.aspx.

You continue to seek out reasons to buy a laptop so if you want a laptop, then buy it. Does studying for the CEH justify purchasing a laptop? I don't think so, but maybe you'd feel more comfortable with it and, as has been mentioned, you'll have room to do a little further exploring down the road.

I was using your example of bluetooth. Bluetooth stuff is not included specifically for the exam. If you wanted to further research that topic afterwards, you could use your laptop - as well as any other topics where having a portable platform would be helpful.

That's my point, and believe me I'm not taking the exam into consideration. I mean think about it for a minute, what good the cert does if we don't know how to penetrate test?? nothing!!!

So I'm talking about the skills first  Grin
You have been very helpful Bill thank you so much man

There is a lot to learn. Don't jump into the deep end, you have to wade into it.
