Hi all,

I admit that I am rather confused by the Poll Results so far.

Since many people in here (EH-Net) are possibly also responsible for interviewing and managing security professionals, I would like their opinion on the poll results.

Would they consider a Professional Certification more valuable than a Masters (or, even more, Phd) degree? From my point of view a Masters Degree on Information Security is much more valued than (most) of the Security Certifications out there.

I would like to hear many opinions here because this is rather crucial. Think about it... here we have a "battle" between academic and technical (often vendor specific) education...

I'm in the process of getting a bachelors and completing certs on the side.  This is a HUGE discussion and you will find people on both sides of the aisle.

It really comes down to what kind of position you are going for.  Post-secondary degrees stress theoretical and conceptual knowledge quite heavily, but they often miss the practical side.  Certs on the other hand typically grade your practical knowledge but have very little theoretical application.

As an employer, I would probably take someone with certs over a masters/phd for technician/administrator roles and would like both for a CIO/management position.

I am finding though that a thorough BUSINESS knowledge will take you farther than any technical skills you may have.

Academic degrees provide you with important aspects of Science and especially with postgraduate studies one gets to get involved in Research.

In my opinion, Certifications are good because they practically "indicate" that one possesses specific knowledge (not expertise though).

Both are strong assets; however, a Degree has no expiration date, is not bound to vendor non-sense and does not care whether you use Juniper, Checkpoint or Cisco, DES or 3DES, object oriented or function oriented programming etc... it gets much much deeper than that. (think about eliptic curves...)

Think about the most famous people we know on Security. Most have studied Cryptography, Physics or Computer Science.

A Degree indicates that someone has the discipline, patience and will to learn and evolve both as a professional as well as a human being.

P.S.1. there are no Pass4Sure, TestKing or ActualTests on Academic Degrees.  Wink

I voted a couple of different ways on that.

Publish a book or article, because everyone wants to see that you have a decent ability to communicate.

No $$$ because I'm working my way out of debt. Once that's done I'm going to Cert up.

I'd love to go back and get a BS degree in CS. But probably isn't going to happen. I haven't cared too much for the online schools I looked at, and the Uni's around here want me to be in class when I have have to be at work.

As someone that does the technical interviews... The last few times. The CCNAs were guaranteed to not be brought in. The people that came in with the CCNA couldn't answer the technical questions they were asked. The CCNPs were better, but that's all they wanted to do. Being a small shop we needed someone that can do Cisco + Firewalls + either Linux or Windows administration.

I am just finishing my B.S. in IT security and will be taking my security+ over the summer. I will also be taking my Masters in Information Assurance at WGU(Wester Governors University) because I hear great things from people EH-net and at other forums. They teach you theory as well as practicality since you come out with I believe 6 certifications(CEH included as well as all certs paid for in tuition)

The best of both words I suppose from my standpoint. Hopefully employers will like this because I can hopefully achieve it by the following year and a half!

But I do find it hard to get experience. I really don't like administration, and I love to program, but that doesn't get you a security job like administration would. So I am busting my yahoos looking for internships and getting myself known by blogging tutorials and such.

Unfortunately this discussion seems to have little participation.

Please fellow members, express your opinion; I believe this is a very important and also interesting topic...
