Isabell,

I would suggest that you post your message in the Ubuntu support forums.  I've posted many questions there and have always received a solid answer.

http://ubuntuforums.org/

My best guess is that your wireless card was not detected or is not supported by the Ubuntu NBR version you have installed.  Make sure you installed the latest version.

I am guessing/hoping that it would be a driver that is missing.

Ubuntu is a good distribution but is generally criticized for wireless issues. Most probably it's a case of missing driver. You can go to Ubuntu forums and search for your driver.

Additionally, you might also want to check these articles

Hi Isabell,

It is more than likely your driver which is not properly supported by Ubuntu. I know as I had the same issue with my netbook which uses a realtek wireless card.

Go this link for help and more info on how to resolve the issue specific to your model: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks

Hope it resolves your problem.

It's hard to say what the issue is without knowing what wifi card your netbook uses (or at least what netbook it is, which would narrow that down to one or two different choices)

As everyone else said it's probably a driver issue. If you have a Broadcom based wifi card it is probably because you haven't chosen which driver you want, the BT43 open-source driver or the Broadcom STA driver.

You would have to plug in the Ethernet card to connect you up to the net and then run the System->Administration->Hardware Drivers control panel and choose which one you want. Ubuntu will then download it.
