Inspired by the workshop at SOURCE Boston 2010, the InfoSec Mentors is now a full-blown project. Volunteers can choose to be either mentors or mentee  or both and appropriate mentor-mentee pairs will be matched up. Though it's too early to predict the success of the project but it's an interesting concept nevertheless.

Inspired by the Mentors Workshop at SOURCE Boston 2010, the InfoSec Mentors project hopes to increase the positive impacts of mentoring relationships in the Information Security community.

For the next few months, the InfoSec Mentors project will be collecting volunteers from both the mentor and mentee camps. The project will match participants based on their experience and interests. Then, in July during Security B-Sides and DEFCON, we will all meet up with our perspective matches.

We recognize that not all mentor relationships are for life. Sometimes it's just nice to have someone at the cons you are looking forward to grabbing lunch with. Whatever the reason, we hope that we can match you up with a great mentor/mentee or both!

Looks like an amazing opertunity. Shame you have to be in the USA and at those events to be part of it.

Attending the events is optional. It'll be beneficial if you do but not required.

Do you need to attend the Las Vegas event to participate?
No. InfoSec Mentors will match you up with an appropriate person regardless of attendance. We strongly encourage people that are attending Blackhat/B-Sides/DefCon to sign up for the program though because it will be the best opportunity to meet your mentor face to face (Event attendees will be given preference to be paired with each other.) Participants that are not able to attend are encouraged to make arrangements on their own to meet their mentor face to face, because we find that this increases the likelihood of a successful match. However, it is not required.

My take from that and a bunch of tweets bouncing around is to get a really solid match, being there is what will seal the deal. Knowing who you are and what are after will making the pairing up work. Picking names from a hat, is never quite as good for either party.

I think this is a brilliant idea, but still those who are physically at the events will get at truly marvellous opportunity.

I hope it spreads to other events.

However, as What90 says and from what I understand from their website, you still have to live in the USA Smiley (sign-up page doesn't have a 'country' tag neither)
Shame, I hope other countries pick up on it as well. But thanks for the info!

Contacted Infoescmentors on twitter. I'll just quote them here

The InfoSec Mentors project is open to all citizenships and locations. Anyone that is passionate about information security!

Perhaps, they'll find you a mentor/mentee in your area so that physical meeting is possible.

@Equix3n-  Always one to acknowledge when I'm wrong - well, most of the time ;-)

ChrisJohnRiley of www.eurotrashsecurity.eu has done a small podcast Marisa Fagan of InfoSecMentors.

They discuss people that aren't able to get to the events in the US and how they hope to grow the program.

Well worth a listen to understand the program and what it or you can offer to the ITSec industry.

Neither have I. I just contacted them and will forward their response here.

It seems that they'll send the mail after matching up a mentor-mentee pair only.

I wonder if they're being hit with more people wanting mentors than people to be the mentors.

I signed up last week and have heard nothing yet. It's new, it's flying by the seat of the pants right now. I'm expecting a rough ride. A year from now, it might be a little more smother.

Equix3n- looking forward to hearing the response.

Received their response on twitter
Quote
Thx @Equix3n, we've received your form, as well as many others. Pls expect the confirmation email soon

My guess is that we'll only receive the email once we are matched up with someone. Choosing a pair is a difficult task and you've to take into consideration various parameters. That's why they're asking for volunteers to help them out. If somebody wants to volunteer they can contact them on twitter @Infosecmentors. Also check out their blog for additional details.
