Hello,

I have a fast questioni regarding the DoD 8570 implementation. I have googled and even read a pdf of the 8570 directive but could not find my answer. According to the 8570 document I read, a Level 1 Tech must secure a computer environtment (CE as per the document). A level 2 Tech must secure a network environment (NE as per the document) and a level 3 Tech is an expert at both CE and NE and additional tasks.

I would eventually like to work for the government, specifically Information Assurance, and I was wondeirng, does a level 3 certification supercede a level 1? Let's say I don't take the A+ or Net+ Cert. (Level 1) but have the GCIH (level 3). Would I be eligible to level 1 jobs?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Regards,

seven.

To the best of my knowledge that is correct. A level 3 IAT/IAM would qualify for level 1 and 2 positions.

Not completely sure, but I'd also say as Bill, that lv 3 qualifies for 1 and 2.

Hmm, thanks for the input guys. I would assume that being an expert in level 1 and 2 would grant you the ability to apply for those jobs, but I don't want to make an "ass" of myself.  Roll Eyes

I could be wrong, but I believe that DoD 8570 still has some time before certifications are required. What I mean is that you still have some time before you are REQUIRED to have the certifications.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

I was pretty sure this was passed in 2004 from what I read. But I too, could be wrong. I only recently found about the whole thing.

I'm not sure on the date but you'll want to earn the certifications (as it'll be required soon enough anyway, if not already).

The only other requirements, aside from the levels, are the specialty certifications that are required for different positions (e.g., CND).

"d.   Starting in FY10 – 70% at contract award, 100% by the end of FY10."

That applies to contractors specifically but I believe it's the same for government employees as well. FY10 ends this year (Sept. 30)

I'm sorry if it came off as me saying that certifications weren't that important yet. What I was trying to point out is that not having the cert does not necessarily knock a person out of contention until the deadline which is Sept. 30 as BillV pointed out.

From my experience, though, your resume is less likely to be looked at if you do not have the cert. I know as soon as I got my GCIH, I got alot more response than I had previously.

Thanks a lot everyone. I'm finishing my B.S. Info.Tech in December and wanted to get a head start in getting certifications and my name out there; starting with security+. I was hoping to get the whole "Wow, this 22 y/o kid just graduated and has certs, maybe let's hire him and watch him bloom." effect lol  Roll Eyes . I have a good understanding of networking and programming from reading a TON of books, but I don't really have funds to pay for all the certs so I will be zeroing in on well known security certs (I would take the CCENT/CCNA but like I said, funds are low, but I understand the material well and play with Cisco gear for test labs)

@Bill
Thanks for the heads up on the speciality certs. I'll def. look into that!

Having actually worked for the government (both civilian and contractor) since 2004, I can tell you that a level 3 cert covers you for level 1 and level 2 jobs.  That being said, I wouldn't wait to get a level 3 cert if you can sit for a level 1 or 2 cert today.

The 8570 certification requirements are identical for both contractor and government personnel.  I know some government employees that are looking for new positions because they can't pass exams (or "don't want to deal with the headache").  Better for all of us I say...

Yep, agree. I'm currently contracting and due to someone I work with (gov't employee) not interested in passing exams, I might have a good shot at getting in as an employee.

Haha, of course, if you don't hold a clearance, you may have difficulty getting them to speak to you apparently:

Quote
Chris G. - Do you have a clearance?
Bill V. - No, I do not currently hold a clearance.
Chris G.  - General Dynamics Information Technology has left the chat

Wow, don't think I'll ever consider a position with General Dynamics.
