I have a fast questioni regarding the DoD 8570 implementation. I have googled and even read a pdf of the 8570 directive but could not find my answer. According to the 8570 document I read, a Level 1 Tech must secure a computer environtment (CE as per the document). A level 2 Tech must secure a network environment (NE as per the document) and a level 3 Tech is an expert at both CE and NE and additional tasks.

I would eventually like to work for the government, specifically Information Assurance, and I was wondeirng, does a level 3 certification supercede a level 1? Let's say I don't take the A+ or Net+ Cert. (Level 1) but have the GCIH (level 3). Would I be eligible to level 1 jobs?

Not completely sure, but I'd also say as Bill, that lv 3 qualifies for 1 and 2.

I could be wrong, but I believe that DoD 8570 still has some time before certifications are required. What I mean is that you still have some time before you are REQUIRED to have the certifications.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

I'm not sure on the date but you'll want to earn the certifications (as it'll be required soon enough anyway, if not already).

The only other requirements, aside from the levels, are the specialty certifications that are required for different positions (e.g., CND).

I'm sorry if it came off as me saying that certifications weren't that important yet. What I was trying to point out is that not having the cert does not necessarily knock a person out of contention until the deadline which is Sept. 30 as BillV pointed out.

From my experience, though, your resume is less likely to be looked at if you do not have the cert. I know as soon as I got my GCIH, I got alot more response than I had previously.

Having actually worked for the government (both civilian and contractor) since 2004, I can tell you that a level 3 cert covers you for level 1 and level 2 jobs.  That being said, I wouldn't wait to get a level 3 cert if you can sit for a level 1 or 2 cert today.

The 8570 certification requirements are identical for both contractor and government personnel.  I know some government employees that are looking for new positions because they can't pass exams (or "don't want to deal with the headache").  Better for all of us I say...
