Hi All,

This one is for many aspiring hackers who browse Internet for hacking resources and purchase books online to enrich their knowledge.

I came across a website 'LEO IMPACT SECURITY' Its reference was in one of the email from hackin9.org emails to which I am subscribed. Leo has released a book on hacking "The Secrets of Hacking" which contains print material and DVD comprising many tutorial videos and tools. As it appeared in Hackin9 mail, I sent them money in Jan and till date still waiting for the material to come.

Though the amount involved is not much, if you consider the numbers of aspiring young people looking forward to make a career in hacking, it amounts huge money, collectively. So, I thought of finding out more details about this company. It is a Jaipur, India based co. with one US contact and one UK contact. ( Today, I checked their website, and they have removed UK phone and added address of US Office!). It seems it operates from a home in Jaipur, India and probably has very high manpower turnaround. I talked to them and send them emails many times since Jan without any success. I have taken up the matter with DSCI, ALIG of ISC^2, local ISACA Chapters and many groups to whom I am subscribed.

I also come across a few cases who ordered the material and after rigorous follow up could get material which is note more than trash. It is full of plagiarism and copyright materials. In all essence, it a malpractice.

My request to young members is to be away from such people. Share info on any of such companies with group members. And let us protect our common wealth.

My best regards.

Also seen this stuff and it immediately smelled bad. Simply looking at table of contents was enough to know it was rubbish.

Exactly. I know people who have gotten this, and it's essentially just information ripped from other legitimate resources and packaged into a book. That's why it comes from India and takes forever to arrive.

Edit: Just noticed that the DVDs come with "200 ebooks"...

Dynamik,

It does not matter from where it originates. We should try to prevent such guys from where ever they operate.

Did any member got its material? I have received it today. Now I will go through the contents and see what materials are produced violating the Laws. I hope I am not violating any Law in turn. I think it would be worth spending some time for the cause and fulfill our CSR!! Cool

Will post after finding out the contents of DVD. Seniors may help such issues.

Regards.

But isn't it true that certain countries wither don't have copyright laws or very lax ones at that?  Although, the people who receive them who live in countries with strict copyright laws are at fault.  It isn't ethical any way you slice it though.

I think you misunderstood my post. I wasn't trying to justify it; I was just providing an explanation.

Exactly.

It would be nice if you could share what quality resources (books, websites, etc.) you find in there, so we could legitimately support them.

we can atleast try to notify the owners of the material that it is being copied and offered for sale worldwide without any rights to do so. From there the owners can take (legal) measures to stop these activities, if even possible.

The best remedy against such activities is consumer awareness. if people know what is offered cant be legit (the all known saying: if it sounds too good to be true...) then dont buy it!

Such posts help alot against these activities. Thanks for sharing this with us and hey, just be glad you didnt recieve a package containing a brick, or worse: noting at all!

actually that is (almost) correct Tongue

http://www.eccouncil.org/store.aspx

if you press the first button you will be redirected to the official eccouncil store (hosted by CheckOut) where you can buy the complete training material (including the DVDs) for just over 500 EU (650 US). I found that out this afternoon when i was searching for some LPT info.

EDIT: corrected the price...

Hi All,

Sorry for responding very late as I was busy in a security consulting work in Middle East.

Yeah, I received the packet before I went on tour. So, could not check it in detail. But had a first glance inside the DVD. Surely, it has some cracks. And many many pdfs. Now, i will spend some time and will report about the contents.

In India, many things have changed. Political leaders have understood that they need to keep pace with technologies. Cyber Crime cells are already open and operational. Recently a Lieutant Colonel is arrested for posting child porno on a German Website. So, ground realities have changed. However, it is equally true that more ideas and brain lies outside such crime cells. So, there need to be a partnership between people and police.

When I went to Tanzania for giving cyber crime training to its police force, I was pleased to know that they already have Encase tool and a team for cyber crime prevention. So, it ensures that ground realities have changed. Though it may take more time to mature it, but a right step in right direction.

Cheers!

they are just a trash bag. All material given in the dvd's are copyrighted and illegal. They give you the cracked version of commercial softwares downloaded from torrents and other cracking sites.
Pdf and videos are also from many websites. There is not a single video in any dvd produced by leo impact.
They are not more than a thief who is selling other items with his name. So don't purchase any book from Leo Impact and save your money and time.

Devesh,

As mentioned earlier, I just browsed through the contents. Print material is "Glossy" trash. I scanned DVD and searched for cracks, rather than browsing all folder, and I found many cracks. As I got busy in normal activities, I could not revert back to our group, as promised, with list of companies whose IPR is being violated. But I will find some time and submit the list.

meanwhile, I got a phone call from its Jaipur, India office about their displeasure of reporting the matter on internet. Subsequently, I got emails from them with an attached exe which installs a malicious software which records passwords. They sell this software also!! They also send me details about US office registration no. etc.. and its announcement of opening an office in Czechoslovakia!!

I have also informed Jaipur Chapter chief of Data Security Council of India and he has promised me to help, if needed.

Let us not stop our crusade against rogues.

Regards.
