In an effort to give a view of books for those they were meant, Chris Jenks offers up his view of a book that has gotten a lot of press here on EH-Net. Hope you like it and his view as one who is starting out as an ethical hacker.

Quote

Review by Chris Jenks

Hacking for Dummies, an introduction to Ethical Hacking, is shallow enough for anyone first stepping into the field, but with tricks, tips and real-world experiences even the veteran penetration tester will find enlightening.

The book is considered to be a good introduction to the world of Ethical Hacking. Like all “for Dummies” books, the subject matter is explained in plain English instead of being filled with jargon and buzz words. That doesn't mean a reader can walk in cold and learn to be an Ethical Hacker (a hacker who is hacking with prior written permission of the owner of the systems). In order to get a deeper understanding, the reader has to have a basic understanding of Networking, System Administration, and Applications. The reader doesn't need to be an expert but really should have a firm grip on the basic concepts.

The current version of Hacking for Dummies is divided into 7 parts. If the reader is familiar with the subject the book doesn't need to be read in order and can be used mostly as reference. However, if the reader is new to information security the best approach would be to read it in the order the book is laid out. Each chapter has a tendency to either refer back to something that was covered before, or refers forward to something covered in more detail ahead.

Thanks,
Don

This guys review was thorough and straight to the point pretty much. The book isn't a bad price but I'm glad I got to see this guys review on it before recommending it out to some friends. I appreciate the link, I'll refer that over to some people who ask me if it's worth picking up!

When I was reading up on how to review books, a lot of the information I found was on how to review a book for a college course. So I went with that.

I know some people do a chapter by chapter breakdown, but I never really cared for that style.

It was also way harder than I thought it would be. I spent a week just staring at my notes trying to figure out what to write.

Edit: I also read the second edition last year, but felt I learned more from the 3rd.

Maybe you think that you learned more today because your knowledge have increased or because you need to write a review and payed more attention when you were reading.

impelse:

I don't think it was so much for the review, but because of how I was reading it. When I read the 2nd edition I just read through the thing and played with parts that sounded interesting.

For the 3rd edition, I approached it by taking notes in every chapter, working along with all parts of the book, and really focused on the book itself. This time around I treated it like it was a book I was reading for a college class.

I think that was what made it stick this time.

I am a bit late on this but thank you for the review. I am new in the world of information security and am trying to quickly play catch up. One of the two books I am currently working my way through happens to be Hacking for Dummies. I carry it around in my travels and it seems to raise a few eyebrows but then mentioning ethical hacking as a possible career choice tends to do that as well.

I do like that the book points you in a direction rather than going into infinite detail. Let's face it, with this type of publication one is not looking for the ultimate answers to everything but a way to start a process. The book has made me re-examine a few things and introduced me to other items I may not have thought about it (or have much experience with such as databases).

Thanks again for the review.
