Thanks, I guess, but on any machines I have, which have the necessary resources, Windows 7 is snappy, for me, at least more so than Vista.  It's definitely NOT as quick as XP (agreed there,) and I wouldn't use it as my primary machine, anyway.  I really, at least for now, only use it as a target on my test network.  I prefer to do day to day on Ubuntu or openSuSE, anyway...  ;-)  (Then I fall back to XP to help thw wife and kids with their MS Office schoolwork...)

Well I think it's pretty good. I've been using win xp for ages and didn't really want to upgrade at first. Windows 7 is probably a bit slower, but I like all the features it offers and of course it's more visually appealing It still seems to be faster than Vista at least. My hardware is pretty good so I didn't really notice a difference in performance. Thought Windows 7 booted a bit slower, but most of my applications seem to load faster.

Also Windows 7 automatically found all my drivers and gives me the updates for them. Every time I install XP for someone I have to search the internet for the right drivers, because the person lost all his CD's and backups.

I think this really depends on what you expect from the OS and what your needs are. I use my system for everything, from development to gaming and I've never had a problem with Windows 7.

Windows 7 is currently the best thing (while XP is the next best) for your average user. Win7 is a big leap forwards compared to Vista and giving the fact it performs very well on "older" machines it outruns Vista on every aspect (making Vista 100% obsolete).

If your computer does not run Win7 smoothly there are 2 options: either replace the hardware, or keep running the current software. Giving the fact that windows xp is pretty old for software standards (10 years and counting! so its damn time they EOLed it) i'd say its time to upgrade your computer. unfortunately computers dont last forever and even if their technology outstands their functionality it should be replaced a lot sooner then you might want.

I am an enormous fan of Windows 7, try installing it on a 72000 rpm drive, or maybe a SSD, and youll see performance increases. It is defiantly is a massive improvement over vista, Ive seen great machines that run horrible with vista, Ive also seen horrible machines that run Windows 7 pretty well.

my biggest complaint with was trying to play some older games that just wouldnt work right, even in compatibility mode.

It seems to be explorer itself that takes up so much ram. But I would say it doesnt take up nearly as much ram or proc useage as vista. In addition, ie resource consumption is improved greatly.
