I would like to help to get the law changed in MI, regarding the need for a PI license to perform computer forensics. If there are people in MI that feel the same way, let's get together and change this.

We have been at the edge of pursuing computer forensics, however the state's licensing puts the stop to it. The PI law needs to be changed.

There are a few states that have similar laws. My company does not currently do business in MI, but we ran into some issues in TX and North Carolina before.  Looks like North Carolina fixed their though.   Hopefully, Michigan will follow.

I believe that they are still working on the relevant laws.   I think it's still a mess though.  My company hasn't done much work in Texas since this mess came about.  Even our ex-law enforcement forensics people with CFCE certifications weren't legally able to do work in Texas.

I remember reading about people getting out tickets issued by cameras because the new laws dictated that the camera operators needed PI licenses. 

Puddn, computer forensics is not simply retrieving data in my opinion.   It is investigation of computer crimes and misuse.  The problem with PI licenses is that they hardly relate to computer forensics.  There are certifications that far better show competency. 

It is more like the PI lobbyists working to get more work for PI's without regard for actually doing the job effectivly.
