Nmap is used for scanning computers, services, ports, etc. all things which are essential when doing a pentest.

If you would like to get more information about Nmap, I would recommend the book Nmap Network Scanning: The Official Nmap Project Guide to Network Discovery and Security Scanning, which was written by Nmap's author Gordon Lyon.

More information can be found at Nmap's official website.

Nmap is sweet.  Comes both commandline (fast) and GUI (great for showing non techies what is going on).  Lets you map out hops between Lans visually, lets you scan what is ON your LAN... I have used this to find rogue machines, and lets you see what services are running on what ports on machines on the Lan.  Includes OS's and service packs etc.  A very powerful tool, and fun to play with.

There are some good articles on the following website if you're new to NMAP: http://www.networkuptime.com/ (Professor Messer) for example:
http://www.networkuptime.com/archives/2006/07/nmap_os_scan_through_firewall.html as well as the guide with some tips and tricks and usage information: http://www.networkuptime.com/nmap/index.shtml

NMAP is a great tool. I can't imagine not to use it. The best book, to me, to learn more about nmap is Fyodor's http://nmap.org/book/toc.html. A very professional book that will give you insights to topics like host discovery.
