Can you start your own book publishing company?
«

I was wondering if you can start your own book publishing house, and if there would be any chance that it would succeed. I was also wondering if I did start my own, if I could be a publisher and editor.
And one more question.. Do you have more than one publisher and editor.

Hello and welcome to the forums.
I see no reason why one can't start his own publishing company, though some money, experience and other things would help. Also I see no reason why one can't be publisher and editor at the same time.
Don't know if your questions are for real, but probably you would get more help with this in other appropriate forums.

If you just want to get books published I believe there are several print-on-demand services where customers can buy your book and it will be printed and delivered. It avoids a lot of the overheads of publishing in quantity, storing, distributing etc.

Yeah I heard about this. Some big book stored have a big book printing machine. Take your book in on a removable storage device, few quid and hours later you have your masterpiece printed.

I know of a few people who used print-on-demand services and were quite satisfied. Don't know how this applies for the English area but I am sure there is not much difference. Comparison of available offers and looking up user reviews on those wouldn't hurt anyway.
It would be interesting to know why exactly you would like to start a publishing company, Panjdlk.

That's what Dan Suarez AKA Leinad Zeraus did for Daemon. He eventually got enough sold and some great press that a big publishing house bought him. A movie deal later and he is on his way to fame and fortune.
Something else to consider is that when I started this site and called it an online magazine, so many people said that it wouldn't work because it was not also in print. Now it is accepted to be online only. You may want to get ahead of the game and do an online only publishing house.
How did you find us? Are you looking at publishing technical/hacking books?

I thought the idea of print-on-demand was pretty interesting, so I started looking around a little. Here are a couple of helpful links:
http://www.sfwa.org/beware/printondemand.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Print_on_demand
http://www.lulu.com/
http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/books.aspx
This might be something I'll look further into sometime in the near future...
And also, to the original question... at one point, all publishing companies had to be started by someone. There's no reason you can't create your own

My wife uses both of the above for her poetry and photography. They pretty good work, honestly. She is happy and the products look great. I don't believe that they do anything to promote your books however. That would be up to you.

In terms of promoting.. while I researched a few companies offering print-on-demand service I found a few which will also do promoting. However, those companies were only very few and extra money had to be paid.

You may also be able to partner with an established publishing company. Oreilly, for instance, has several other small publishers that they work with.

OWASP use lulu.com for their publications. I bought one of their books for £10 and was really pleased with the quality/delivery.
