remember that free information is always welcome (one way or the other), but support the hacking community and BUY books you really like and use them often. it also looks good to have a full bookshelf, even if it is just to impress your (hacker)friends

One of the guys I work with theorized that you got paid more for having more on your shelf. I'm not sure how true that is, but I will admit that you look like you know more.

<grin> While I never quote heard it put that way, in words, that does seem to ring a bell in a lot of the companies I've worked for / with...

I've never seen that anywhere I worked. Maybe I should bring my 7ft bookshelf to work. all it has on it is computer books.

Try adding a few business titles to your shelf and place them startegically where your boss will see them like on the corner of your desk or on a shelf that is eye-level when he walks into your office or work area.
A little subliminal advertising on your own behalf never hurt. Take some of those Social Engineering skills and apply them to your career.

But then the manager could be threatened, as it might indicate that you are going for his position.

Don
social engineering skills are not only useful in getting information. there also useful for getting people to do something for you! (i remember a certain seminar where someone told me: just say what the heck, and go for it!) you will be suprised what you get if you simply ASK for it! apply your skills in every situation they can be used, it doesnt matter if your applying for a job or asking for a raise, all these situations are perfect for getting those skills up!
there's a little saying i always think of in these situations: No is what i HAVE, yes is what i CAN GET!

You have no idea how true that statement is Jordy. The answer is always no until the question is asked.
