Hi everybody,

I am studying for the CEH exam and I still having a question in my mind about footprinting and information gathering. Is footprinting another way to refer to passive information gathering or not?

Thanks

I would say the two are very similar, however, footprinting does not have to be totally passive. For example, a DNS zone transfer is not passive but would commonly be part of the footprinting stage.

Although I am not sure I would agree with timmedin. I don't think that those two mentioned terms are somewhere defined similar to a standard therefore I would say it depends on what you associate with them. As you are interested in it in terms of the CEH I would try to find out what they associate with it. As I haven't done CEH yet (and could not convice my company to help with paying for it) I am not sure about the corrent answer on this.
