Hello Eh.Net,

I had a quick question. I'm enrolled in an Ethical Hacking course this summer and it started already. Were reading a book called 'Hands-On Ethical Hacking & Network Defense' (I may possibly do a review on it...maybe not though cause it seems a little outdated). In chapter 2 it gives us a brief introduction to TCP / IP. I had a quick question, the author is stating the SYN flag stands for Synthesis. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the SYN stood for Synchronize? Is synthesis an alternate name use here or did the author have a typo?

That's how I typically think of it (synchronize), but...

Synchronization according to The TCP/IP Guide:

Sounds good. I appreciate the quick responses - I knew it was synchronize, I looked at Synthesis and grinned. Strange the author didn't catch that one, we'll just let that one slide?

Amazing how this stuff gets past the editor.  I was attending a lecture last week where the presenter was covering UDP scanning (more as a background item relating to a proprietary product).  He was apparently confused about ICMP port unreachable messages.  He talked about how ICMP messages are sent out to UPD ports to determine which ones are open (Huh?).

I tried to politely correct him, but he told me he was positive he was correct (and it was on his slides, so it must be correct.

As I am reading quite a lot I see often such mistakes in books. As I am writing myself quite a lot too I could say that it may happen that the authors write for whatever reason something wrong although they know it better.
But normally this should not happen, especially not in a (reference)book.

As the others said too and you will find on most sites listed by google Synchronization is correct.
