Hi all. Im BRAND NEW here. New to all of this. I want to learn to be a hacker. And am very persistent on the topic. I just need to know where to start. Ive been looking around and have come to the conclusion that that I first need to learn to: use cmd, read script, program, learn what TCP/IP is & get familiar with Linux. I just need to know where to start. From the point of view of somebody who knows nothing on the subject. A couple links to good sources or good books to read & study would be great. I'd really appreciate ANY help... thanks in advanced.

SO far i've got wireshark and learned to capture packets but, still have no clue what any of it means. Ive got Backtrack on disk but, absolutely ZERO knowledge on how to actually run it as when I boot from the disk it goes to a command prompt and Im guessing I need to somehow install it from there but I dont have the knowledge to know what to do.

Im willing to look for myself. I just need a point in the right direction.

Just remember. Im a COMPLETE n00b. Starting from absolutely SCRATCH.

Faero,

welcome to the forums Smiley

I appreciate the desire to jump in at the deep end, but the first skill I'd suggest working on is your google/search-fu. There are some truelly awesome threads on this site, answering the same question.

Likewise, there are some great resources teaching FTP basics, try here for example.

Best advice, go out and play (on your own kit obviously, check the site and google for labs and VM setups). If you encounter specific difficulties or queries, they're bound to find a good answer around here.

All the best in your search.

Seems as if you have the right attitude towards the learning process.

I would recommend learning some web programming languages first, start off with HTML, PHP and MySQL.

Download a more stream lined Linux distro to play around with first, like Ubuntu, no need to install it to have a go you can run it straight from the Live CD.

Learn some simple networking commands for the command line, ping, netstat, traceroute, ftp, telnet, ect...

If you have a spare PC, play around with networking it and connecting to it remotely.

You should probs start off with some begginers books for programming, hacking and networking. The for dummies ones should be ok to start with.

Welcome to EH-Net.

I agree with what the others wrote. To point you in the right direction, try the pinned threads at the top of the Network Pen Testing Board.

This topic is amazing. Reminds me of physics in the way that when you think you've broken it down to the smallest form (quantasized) it gets even smaller. When I think I've found a starting point. I am pointed somewhere else to help me understand what I'm learning. Ha. Its a constant quest for knowledge.

But... Right now I am reading the intro to C tutorial and have DLed Dev-C++. It seems again though that I'll need to look deeper in order to even grasp this tuorial. So I will start with learning the commands and try to become somewhat familiar with Linux. Thanks for the Linux Ubuntu rec. btw.

When you say connecting remotely do you mean by using the Remote Desktop app. that comes with windows? Because I've done that no problem. I'm guessing you mean by some other, more complicated way, so I will look into that.

This school semester just ended for me but, for the next one I was planning on taking an Intro to Linux course, SQL Server Admin. course, & a Network Infrastructure course. DO you think these classes would be useful or would it be easy enough to figure out on my own? I guess I'll see what I know when school starts again.

Thanks for your suggestions. Anymore help is greatly appreciated. I'll be back with more questions after I've messed around a little with the commands & that Linux Ubuntu.

Thanks Again.

I will start by reading Hacking for Dummies. Seems like a good one for me. Found it stickied in the Network Pentesting board. Thanks Don.

Yes, not only through Remote Desktop tho, try FTP, Telnet, VPN, SSH, HTTP, VNC, ect...

Play around with them and get to know their strengths/weakneses.

The more you know the better.
