Hi All,

I was wondering about what people do to research vulnerabilities on operating systems that they don't own.  case in point - I'm about to start a security course that requires me to have windows server 2000.  I'm able to download a trial version of server 2003, but I'm not able to find a copy of server 2000.

thoughts?

A lot of people I know that are in academia get the newer OS's from Microsoft DreakSpark (for free).  You have to be associated with a higher learning environment to get an account.

Another option is to get an MSDN subscription.  They offer the OS products fairly cheap.  I know several folks who use that.  It is definitely cheaper than purchasing the OS's at retail.  Of course with licensing you can't use the OS for anything but testing, etc...

If you just need a copy of win2k server, you could go on amazon and purchase one of the Microsoft Press books for MCSE on Windows 2000.  Seems like most of those came with a 6 month eval copy of win2k server.  I have several of those books lying around here collecting dust.  I bet they're cheap now on Amazon.

Sorry to jump in, but it's relevant to the MSDN route.  I'd heard about that but is it possible to use the software several times?  For instance, I want to have a virtual domain in VMWare so I would like to install Windows 2003 (possibly 2 so I can experiment with this format) and 2 or 3 instances of XP Pro.  If I got the XP Pro or Windows 2003 down the MSDN route, would I be able to install them multiple times into the VMWare?

If this isn't possible, what other suggestions do I have?  I guess that VLK versions of Windows 2003 and XP Pro would work - but I don't have access to these versions.

MSDN subscription is definitely cool to have.  If you can't afford that $2000 a year, you can look into Microsoft Action Pack subscription.   It's about $400 a year and includes all basic versions of serves and software.  It does not include development tools.   There is a catch, you have to be a Microsoft Partner of some sorts.   It's not that difficult to be come one, you basically just need someone with a Microsoft cert in your organization.

I am almost thinking that maybe you should drop an email to Microsoft.  They are not making any money from discontinued products, maybe they will hook you up with a download.   One can dream, right?

hmm - this is all getting mighty expensive for a non-proffessional like me.

I guess I could make it tax deductible but still....  I've never had a need for an MSDN subscription because I almost entirely work with oracle/unix..

can't even afford justify the cost of a full copy of IDA Pro....  guess it's time to get me a job in the industry  :-)
