Coming home from SANS 2009 with my son asleep on my lap, I couldn't pull out my laptop. Well, I could, but it would probably leave some nice red marks on the side of his head. Instead, I did what most travellers do. I grabbed the SkyMall magazine just to pass the time. I was surprised to find not one but 2 pens with video cameras in them for surveillance. There's this one called the Spy Pen for $149:

and the Multifunction Video Pen for $99.99:

And its Silver Version:

I shared my find with Mike Murray, who, in fine fashion, one upped me. Check out the MVX DVR 750:

This is a cool site that also has a number of different hardware devices including, since this is the Ethcial Hacker Network, devices to detect cameras:

Sweet!  Nice little present to drop off in a potted plant looking at a keypad.

That would be true if this picture of 'What Is Included' was what I originally thought it was:

It looks like a remote. Now that would be awesome to be able to turn it on from your pocket instead of having to hit the top of the pen making your recording less obvious. Low and behold, it was the wall charger. Why it has a big button in the middle, I have no idea.

Even without the remote, this could still be a lot of fun to play with in a pen test senario. Imagine, you are going to be testing somewhere inside your own network to simulate an insider threat. Your boss or who ever you target has a nice potted plant near his desk. And as g00d_4sh said, you stick in the pot just before your target walks in. Since we are an insider, we already know about that time. When he leaves at lunch, we go a collect the pen.

Alternatively, in this day of badging in an out of every thing, most people have their on a lanyard. Put the pin on there and do some shoulder surfing to get a person's pin as they enter a controled area or get there check card pin.

The possibilities are endless. This could be way too much fun. Thanks Don

Somewhat un-related, but rather funny.  At my building they just installed a 'wall display' that continually cycles through missing children photos.  Kind of an attention grabber... as I was looking at it I noticed a little shiny black nub at the bottom.  As I inspected it closer, it turned out to be a built in camera in the frame of the display.  Very cool actually, so it catches people's photos as they walk in the building and turn to look at the wall mount that is changing beside them.  I wave each day when I leave work heh.  Tongue  I thought it was a pretty fun idea to grab facial shots of folks though, not sure who came up with it since I dont' run the sec for the building, just the network that deals with my agency.  The little hidden camera thing made me think about it.

I think ThinkGeek.com had a small variety of both spy cameras and spy camera detectors. Cheaper I'm sure, but probably not as robust.

As soon as I saw that picture I was thinking it was a remote too Sad Maybe they'll add that in a future release
