A new study by javelin research claims that most cases of ID theft are caused by lost or stolen wallets (43%), not data breaches (11%). Certainly not what I would have expected these days.

That actually makes perfect sense. Look at the millions of items of data stolen from all the breaches around the globe. Chances are everyone has personal data in the hands of a criminal somewhere. Yet, identity theft is not as high as the amount of data suggests it should be. Hmmmmm... Does this mean it is actually more difficult to turn personal data into a stolen identity or just that the end game of the criminal is not identity theft. Maybe they're happy with simply purchasing stuff with stolen credit card numbers.

Nice post.

I would say this. Having seen boards run by the Russian crime syndicates (shadowcrew, et al) the big Russian suppliers want only to "cash." They hardly ever get a mule to change identities, when that mule does its almost always due to law enforcement chasing them.

If you read about ID theft a lot, there are some good stories that Wired has done. The recent ones profile how the FBI and Secret Service infiltrate and track the carder forums, but there were a few older ones written and submitted by the carders themselves describing how they interacted with the global syndicates, cashed out cards in waves (which recently happened again), and bought merchandise to ship to foreign countries. ID theft is hardly mentioned.

If i can find the article its a good read, i think the carder was El Mariachi.

actually - I really have to point out - the whole point behind the article linked to is actually that the stats that say most identity theft is caused by lost or stolen wallets are actually WRONG.

the actual headline is:  "Stolen Wallets, Not Hacks, Cause the Most ID Theft? Debunked"

and it explains why in the second pie chart by demonstrating that a massive 65% of identity theft victims had absolutely no idea how their details were stolen (and it follows that they were definately not physically robbed as I think they would have noticed) and therefore are actually very likely to be the result of skimming or a major data breach due to nefarious online activity.
