I wanted to see what people use as there Windows based or Linux based IRC client that is free. Also state what is appealing about it to you as well as input you might have about the security of the application.

I currently use Xchat as my client for Windows, I like it because it has all the functionality of Mirc and its free. I am not aware of anything that is negative from a security standpoint of Xchat, but I would love to hear what everyone has to say about it.

When it's just for chat - I use Chatzilla - the Mozilla Firefox Add-on. When I need more features, i prefer to use mIRC. And finally, when I don't have any of these tools / application, or when I just want to promote our IRC chat , I just use a web based ajax IRC Client. So to summarize:
  • mIRC
  • Chatzilla, and
  • Web based Ajax IRC Client

I prefer mIRC also but it isn't free.  It's well worth $20 though.

Hrmmm true enough. I'd likely fall back to chatzilla if it absolutely had to be free.
