Thought my first post here would be a positive plug for the EHN and infosecinstitute.

I've been a long time lerker here and this is the first place I hear of the CEH. After reading more on it in the forums I found myself over at Infosecinstitute. I purchased their study material and went to reading and lab work.

Needless to say after studing hard and banging away at their labs, I felt ready to take the test. Took the test which took me about 45 minutes and got a 96%.

I got a lot of good insight from the members here, so thanks.

Now on to the next tests CPT and CEPT!

That's an awesome first post, and welcome to EH-Net.

We're doing CEPT at the next ChicagoCon May 4 - 8Wink Wink

This is a small request to you and others who take training based on thoughts or info found on this site. Please tell them we sent you. That way they know we are a valuable resource for them. We are affiliates of many of the training providers such as Training Camp, SANS and InfoSec Institute, and thus make a little money each time a recommendation turns into someone taking their training. It helps keep this site alive. If they don't know you found them through us, we don't get supported.

Thanks for letting me hijack your thread.

Either way, congrats and awesome score.

Good to see you've decided to crawl out of the shadows and actually sign up! Very nice score, looks as if you were well prepared.

Congratulations on passing the exam. As someone who is planning on taking the test this year, it's good to hear from others about their experiences with training.

Guess I'll chime in too as I just passed the CEH a few days ago. I've been a software engineer for 10 years, and work on security-related government projects. I'm looking to move away from coding and get more directly into the security area.

cheers!

It would be very helpful if discuss about your test experience and how you prepared for CEH.

Congrats raytracer,

thanks! I prepared only by reading the 3 prep books (one by Kimberly Graves, 1 by Krutz/Vines, and my favorite by Michael Gregg). I bought the PrepLogic practice exam but ended up not using it much...it was a waste of money as the questions are nothing like the actual exam..

For me, it was enough to read each of the three books twice. I've had recent graduate courses (online from Iowa State U. )in info security that included some hands-on hacking projects using tools nmap, nessus, etc. The grad classes also helped prepare me for the SSCP exam, which I passed last year...

BTW, I scored 74% on the CEHv5, with 70 being passing. Not an impressive score, but it's what I expected.

The names of the books I used are:
CEH: Certified Ethical Hacker Review Guide: Exam 312-50 by Kimberly Graves
The CEH Prep Guide by Ronald Krutz & Russell Vines
Certified Ethical Hacker Exam Prep by Michael Gregg

I'd say my prep time was about 6-8 months...I studied on a very part-time basis and am pretty lazy! The only surprises on the exam itself were the 150 questions (vs. 125 ) and the wordiness of some of the questions. Also, it seemed like my first few questions were the hardest, but after about no. 10 they were easier. Since I'm not good at rote memorization, I knew that I'd never score really high, so I was just aiming to pass.

thanks, all!
