New Fox Series 'Lie To Me' Based on Paul Ekman's Work
«
on:
January 18, 2009, 02:41:08 PM »
The DVR is definitely set to record this one. Here's the description of the show from the
Lie To Me Official Site
:
Quote
LIE TO ME, the compelling new drama from the producers of 24, stars Tim Roth ("The Incredible Hulk," "Reservoir Dogs") as DR. CAL LIGHTMAN, the world's leading deception expert who studies facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if someone is lying, but why. When someone shrugs one shoulder, rotates a hand or raises the lower lip, Lightman knows he's lying.
Based on the real-life scientific discoveries of Paul Ekman, the series follows Lightman and his team of deception experts as they assist law enforcement and government agencies to expose the truth behind the lies.
Paul Ekman is the major force behind Facial Action Coding System (FACS)
and author of many definitive books on the topic with others such as Erika Rosenberg and Wallace V. Friesen. Here's how
his site
describes what his group does:
Quote
The Paul Ekman Group - pioneers in research on emotions and deception - provides training programs that help individuals and groups better understand emotions and become more effective at distinguishing truth and lies. Emotions Revealed training increases your ability to recognize and regulate emotions in yourself and in others.
Hope this one lasts,

I liked the first one, but I wanted to reserve judgement until I had at least caught 2 episodes. Now I can't wait for the 3rd one tonight. They way they intermix pop-culture references to lies and liars makes it more enticing to those other than us who watch it carefully for the details.
I'm impressed by the acting and direction. Imagine telling an actor not just what their lines are and blocking (where to walk, how to move, etc.), but to now have to pay strict attention to facial movements to properly convey the lie or the truth is stunning.
I also like that it is not strictly set in a law enforcement environment like "The Mentalist" which didn't grab me. I can more appreciate the consulting firm concept. This allows them to handle cases of many more sorts including but not limited to those criminal in nature. It also mirrors some real-world firms that are successful based on a simple concept of being experts in one very specific field.
I also find the lead character much more human and flawed, which in turn is more realistic than "The Mentalist," which seems a little too slick and know-it-ally for my taste.
Just one man's opinion, but I recommend it.

I wonder how much of that is based on actual human reaction, and the percentage of difference from one person to the next.
This sort of thing has always caught my interest, the show looks pretty good. Even better if it is mostly accurate.

It seems fairly accurate to me. It would have to be hell to work around folks like that all the time. Talk about developing your poker face.

It's been a while, but here's an update:
We're on Episode 11 and I'm totally hooked. I can't wait for each new episode. Apparently news is out that is has been picked up for a 2nd Season. w00t!!
It's not perfect, but what show is. I'll forgo the nitpicking... trying to be better at that... and just focus on the positives which far outweigh any small details.
Overall it's entertaining, the characters are intriguing and it's educational.
Anyone else?

I'm addicted to this show as well. I really don't have time to watch tv during the week but this is one of the few shows I make sure I catch up on, on Saturdays!

This show is really intriguing. I find myself trying to study peoples gestures and non-verbal communication when they speak. Makes a boring meeting more fun. Even more fun with a smarmy sales guy.

I usually don't watch TV at all, I don't have cable or anything, but I always try to catch this on Hulu when I get a chance. They usually have 4 or 5 of the most recent episodes.
I'm very happy to hear there may be a second season.
