Windows 7

Over the past few years, you've asked us to make some changes to Windows. We listened closely. Now it's time to share an early look at how we've used your feedback. Windows 7 is faster, more reliable, and makes it easier to do what you want. Both the everyday things and the killer "is that really possible?" things. Dig into this site to see what's coming. Want to try the Beta? Come back the afternoon of January 9. And remember—this is just a preview. There's more to come.

Something to keep in mind is that Vista was in beta for almost 2 years before RTM. Take that for what you will.

I'm most curious to see it. Hopefully, it'll be a bit of an improvement.

To protect your MP3 files
1. Before you install this Beta release, back up all MP3 files that might be accessed by the computer, including those on removable media or network shares.
2. Install the Beta release of Windows 7; download and install the Update to Windows 7 Beta (KB961367) located on this page.

I guess it's for granted that you should back up your files when installing an operating system, but to admit that it's possibly going to do something nasty to one particular file format really ticks me off somewhat.

I had the faint hope that MS had left thoughts of policing the worlds intelectual copyright behind in Vista.

Wow!  I agree with you NickFnord that's kinda crappy of Microsoft to possibly be targeting a single format.  And to be aggressive enough to affect even files stored on share drives is a bit over the top.  I am definitely going to have to play around with this little "feature".

Yup, the demand appears to have tanked the infrastructure that they had setup to provide the download. I think they didn't help this by saying that it would only be available to the first 2.5 million downloaders.

Haven't had the opportunity (or time) to download it yet, but an acquaintance says it's not too bad. Like a lightweight Vista that has yet to break anything  Cheesy

Looks like they have everything working now. I was just able to pull keys for both the 32 and 64 bit versions. I believe that this beta ver is good until sometime in august.

I still can't download it - I get to the page where it gives me the "download now" and "installation instructions" buttons but when I click on the download now, my browser says it's loading a page and there's some network activity, but nothing happens after that.....

edit:  nevermind - it worked when I used IE rather than firefox...

I downloaded this from MSDN, and I have to say its nice and smooth operating.
Like someone else said, its just like Vista with some tweaks, but even in Beta it does seem to run well.

I am running it on a virtual box, and havent done much messing, but seems good so far.
