Is this just to get us to have a feel for Linux since many of the good tools run off of this platform?  I would imagine that they would teach us rudimentary commands and such.

They probably will, but, if this is like my CEH course, and no one needs the 'Intro to Linux' discussion, then they will pass by it very quickly. So I recommend playing with one of many Linux distros (preferably BackTrack), so you can dedicate more time in class to other subjects.

Counter Hack Reloaded has a great chapter on everything you need to know about Linux to take a course such as this.

I don't really know any specifics about the CPTS course, so I will try to get Mile2 to start contributing to this forum.
