try typing airmon-ng start wlan0 11.

This should then show you what you got going on, what mode they are in and drivers used.

I have also used BT3 on many machines and not had any issues with the Alfa

Hello all,

I wanted to report back stating success with the ALFA AWUS036H
with backtrack 3.  My laptop is a Dell D600 USB(1.1).  I had
been using the adapter with no problems in Windows with only
1 of the 2 USB connectors.  For some reason I need to have
both connected to my laptop for backtrack 3 to see it.
It works great with airmon, aircrack, areplay.

Ken

Hello all,

New here with questions

I have the Alfa AWUS036H and find it works great with Windows XP.
I also have the SRC 300mW pcmcia card.  I find it far more sensistive
than the SRC.

When you say it works right out of the box with backtrack,  I can't seem
to get mine to work.  I have backtrack 3 and it does not see it.
I open a shell and typr iwconfig and it's not there.

At the backtrack site they talk about drivers for it to work.  So far I have tried
what they state but no luck.

I know nothing about linux but would really like to use this usb adapter like
I use the SRC with backtrack for airodump, aircrack, etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks
Ken

The question concerning which card to get that works best for cracking wep seems to come up from time to time on this forum so I thought it might be helpful if I posted what I have found to be the best. I spend a lot of time testing wireless Cards and antennas that work best for cracking wep.  I am surprised about the amount of cards I have accumulated over the years. I have often found that wireless antennas that connect to your laptop via USB usually work the best, regardless of trying to crack wep or just connect to an open router.  In all my testing, the Alpha AWUS036H is hands down the best I have used.  At 500mw its range and power is impressive. For Backtrack enthusiast, I should mention that its works right out of the box with Backtrack 3 final.   Most importantly, it injects packets with amazing proficiency. I am cracking 128 bit wep consistently in less than 12 minutes! You can buy it for as little as $55 and that makes it a deal compared to some set ups.  I really only have good things to say about this antenna and recommend it highly!

My only complaint...   My laptop is USB1.1 and I find this adapter causes
a USB power surge.  I have tried both the short and the long of the Y section
of the USB cable with the same results.  The way I get around it is with
a 2nd USB power supply connected to the 2nd cable of the "Y" section.

Hmm... I have this odd craving to go crack some WEP.  Roll Eyes

Just sucks that this is one of those bulky looking adapters. I can't stand those. I much prefer something internal and out of the way. Yo, Kev.. are there no pcmcia adapters that you know of which can compete with this USB adapter you've told us about?

Thanks!

Sup P0et,

The best card I have found so far is UBIQUITI NETWORKS WLAN PC-EXPRESS CARD 802.11a/b/g 300mW. The draw back is you need to attach an antenna to it so you are back to being a little bulky again. Although they make a fairly nice antenna that just snaps on to the laptop, but the range is so-so. I mean thats what its all about - range. If range is not important aspect in your penttest, then even internal wifi can sometimes be just fine. I have an acer laptop with an internal atheros chip that does a great job if I am sitting in or near the same room as the router.

Has anyone gotten the Defcon Atheros driver... and re-enabled trasmit?  If you went to the talk, you know what I'm talking about.

Heh, channels 4920-6100 open, that's kind of nifty.

My guess is it should. I'd go wireshark over CommView though.

pasha,

i tried CommView for about a month under Vista.  It was a great struggle getting it
to work with Atheros chipset 247 ... even with tech support from Jason.  I suspect
getting it to work with the Alfa would be even more difficult.  The interface
is complex and not particular user-friendly.  The amount of detail revealed about the
AP is rather poor.  But I have an Alfa and am running it under Ubuntu & Slackware
and it works beautifully.

If you are serious about Wi-Fi, I suggest you trash Microsoft and get into Linux.
The difference between a tool like aircrack-ng and CommView is like the difference
between night and day.  Not to mention the fact that Linus and aircrack-ng are free.
