Hi All,

I am planning to launch an open source security related project. Before registering a domain name, I was discussing the same with my colleagues and they mentioned that Open Source projects generally do not fall under the .com domain or they don't register .com domain (generally).

Is there any restriction on this? Does any one know about this? If i register a .com domain, will the project be out-of-the-place?

Links, references, opinions, experiences on this topic will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I imagine you'll be fine with a .com. The days of top-level domains being restricted to particular purposes are (mostly) long gone. You may also want to look at the free services for hosting open source projects that are provided by sourceforge:

I agree with Jason. Just because it's not "commercial" doesn't mean you can't have a .com domain name. Certainly don't let that restrict you from choosing a name you like, if it's available.
