I have used the VM instance a few times in some of the classes that I teach. It was helpful when I needed a Snort setup that was good to go without any fuss. It comes loaded with tools and is a pretty nice setup.
I think I was using v1.5 but I have not played with it in the last 6-9 months. I know they did a recent release.
